View Full Version : Replacing Muncie tailshaft bushing - what's involved?

Hey guys -

Took my driveshaft to the driveline shop today, and the guy says the slip yoke is junk (I kinda thought it was). Anyway, he suggested replacing the tailshaft bushing too because that was probably worn out as well. So what's involved in replacing this bushing? Any help and/or hints would be much appreciated! Thanks!

To do it properly, you need to remove the tranny and remove the tail housing to drive it out and drive a new in. Years ago my uncle taught me that at the dealership sometimes they drove the old one into the tranny and then drove a new one in which left the old one just rattling around on the tranny tailshaft. I know it sounds terrible, but he said it never caused any problems. To do this, you would need a piece of pipe to slip over the shaft to drive the old into the tranny and drive in the new one. I do not like this at all, but I guess if it works -----------------------------

Rainer, I have a kit that removes and replaces the tailshaft bushings in auto trans cars and i used it on my 88 Monte Carlo SS on the tailshaft bushing with the trans still in the car and together. When I replaced the worn parts in my M-20 I had it apart and I had to hone the bushing a little to get it to fit the slip yoke. I don't have the tool kit # with me here at work, but will look it up if you want it.

Hi Rainer, I have the kit number for you. It's a Mastercraft kit ,transmission bushing puller and installer kit Model # BP-2. I think I got it from one of the tool trucks ,either Mac or Snap-On way back in the late 70's. hope this helps.

Thanks for the help, Tom & Leo. I've got my front clip off and was planning to pull the motor and tranny as a unit to detail the engine compartment. I guess that would be a good time to replace the bushing.

Leo, one more question. Is that kit necessary only when doing the replacement in the car?

Rainer, I used a PVC pipe coupling, the correct outside diameter, to drive the old bushing out and install the new one. Put a block of wood on the coupling and tap it with a hammer. The coupling is available for pennies at any hardware store. I put the new bushing in a freezer overnight beforehand to contract it. The tailshaft housing was off the trans. von

Rainer, Yes, It keeps you from doing unnecessary disassembly w/ trans in the car. Since you are pulling the eng/trans to detail the eng compt, you or someone can take the tailshaft housing off and replace the bushing. It can be done without taking the trans apart,but it requires too much explaining to tell you here. Perhaps DZ or someone can e-mail you with the procedures.

I have heard of this tool but never used one because I always just replace the bushing when I have one apart. But it would certainly be a good tool to have. I think I will check on one.
