OK, simple question: What is shot peen? I've heard this term for years but never figured out what it was.

Shot peening is the act of shooting metal beads at the surface of a part to make a compressive stress in the surface. This has two benefits: one is improved fatigue life and for some castings it will reduce porosity and leakage. The process can be done by shooting the shot with air pressure or by flinging it off from a rotating wheel.

Interesting. So, it pounds the surface smooth a very fine level?

Don't those "peens" get into the nooks and crannies of a motor? Wouldn't this cause the same problem as blasting?
