Need a new steering gearbox. Possibly look for one at salvage ($300 new is really steep...is it absolutely worth it?). Do I need to look Chevelle SS specific, or are there a list of car types that will be compatible?

Pretty common steering box, but you want one with the chevelle pitman arm for an easy bolt in swap. I have good used spare ones if you are interested in a used replacement.

I'm not sure how they work, but are pitman arms removable? I've got a PS setup now so I already have a gearbox with a pitman arm, just the box is bad. Can I just swap the arms themselves?

When I redid my front end, I bought a 'new' remanufactured box from the local Advance Auto for $130. Here's a link to the box at Parts America (http://www.partsamerica.com/PartDetails.asp?SourceArea=&SourcePage=SEARCHRESULTS&MfrCode=A1C&MfrPartNumber=276537&PartType=255&PTSet=A), Advance Auto's website.
You'll need a Pitman arm puller to get yours off, only a couple of bucks. I don't know if there's a trick to getting it back on. I tried putting mine on the new box by just turning the nut back on, but I never did get it to seat all the way on the shaft.
Do a search and you'll find quite a few posts on upgrading to a quicker ratio box if that's what you want.
