An acquaintence recently purchased a '68 malibu and the VIN doesn't match the title
she registered and licensed the car (no vehicle inspections are required) before she realized the problem. Now what to do? She called the DMV and was told a State Trooper will have to inspect the car and locate another VIN on the vehicle to verify. She asked me where any other VIN's may be located. I really don't know, I've heard from the firewall to frame to under the gas tank.... Can anyone elaborate further?? I'd like have a more definate place to look. rather than complete dissembly of the car and cleaning to locate it.
TIA

There may be one inside the door jam, towards the front of it (front of the cab). I know tehy did this before 68, but I'm not sure when they stopped doing it. Its there on my 67.

Vin tag,2 partial vins stamped under the heater box, partial vin on the rocker panel usually under the sill plates, partial in the upper flat part of the trunk seal area, where the qtr panel and the filler panel connect, one on the drive side frame rail right beside the gas tank ,on top.

It's possible that there will be one on the top of the frame rail behind the left rear tire - but don't hold your breath. If it is there, it will be near impossible to read with the body still on the frame. Even with the frame removed, the stampings are either nonexistent or so light that rust/crud/age makes it impossible to read.

Best bet is on the firewall, behind the blower motor housing. Pretty much need to move or remove the right inner fender to access the housing. No picnic, but easier and more reliable than pulling the frame off

last year my friend bought a 66 Chevelle with NO VIN tag... It had a title, but no way to know if it was actually for that car. I told him to make sure before he gave the guy any money.

The seller had no problem with my friend driving the car to the local Highway Patrol office (obviously, he wasn't hiding anything) before even leaving a deposit...

they drove the car inside the shop and closed the door (wouldn't let my friend watch). About 30-45 minutes later, they pulled the car out. It did match the title, and they restamped the original VIN on a new VIN plate. The only really horrible thing, is they riveted the new VIN tag on the back side of the door jamb (by the latch striker), instead of in the front in the area of the original (holes were still there)... We didn't know they would do this, or else we would have asked it to be placed near the original location...

Anyway, the Highway patrol doesn't want people to know where all the hidden areas are (for obvious reasons)...

So while it nice to know, if you take it to the authorities, they should be able to verify pretty quickly, without dissassembling the entire car... They will have to do this anyway, and then you can look for the clean area where they were searching...

Don't even want to think about what would happen if they found a VIN number on your car that matched a car reported stolen a few years and owners ago.

"Hidden Locations" That only the Highway Patrol knows about?? Give me a break. Most of the Highway patrol in our area only know new vehicles not Antique's like ours. At a local show one of our finest came up to me and stated that I (myself) have the best looking 67 Chevelle that he had ever seen. I just smiled and said thanks. At least he didn't call it a Ford..

Thanks for the replys. She called me this weekend and said she'd evidently worked something out with the prevoius owner and he's buying the car back. Her husband wasn't thrilled with the car anyhow. I'm going to contact the previous owner and see if he's interested in parting it out. smile.gif

Its true!
The HP does know of places the vin is located that
is not advertised to GQ public. Does not mean that
most of us don't know where they are.
I took my sons 70 Mach I to the OHP for and inspection because we discovered the title did not match the vin. They did the same thing. Rolled it inside and came out 45 min later. Announced it was not the car on the title. They did say it was never listed as stolen. They seemed pretty miffed at us for some reason. Never did figure that out. The down side was, they confiscated the title we had on the spot and issued us a permit to get a new title made..
As a 1988 Ford !
Thanks a lot guys.
