Just kind of curious what the best way to sand my doors would be. They still have the paint on them and I am painting the car with black primer temporarily until I can get it painted. I just dont know if I need to break all the way through the paint to primer, or if I can just scuff it, and what should I use to scuff it with? They have only a few light door dings, but I do need to weld the trim holes up if that matters,( I know I will need to go to metal there) but I should be able to smooth it out with light filler and primer, right? Thanks for all your answers, you guys are life savers!!!!!!

Make sure that whatever you put on the old paint (primer or paint) is compatable with it. If it isn't, it can cause the new paint to bubble up or crack.
As far as sanding, I am no expert and can only speak from my personal experience, but I have found 300 to 400 grit wet/dry paper to work well with the paint I have used in the past. I have noticed finer grit didn't stick as well and rougher grit made the paint finish rougher.
As I said, I am learning as I go and don't know if my experiences are only valid for the particular paint I used. I would be interested to hear what a professional would recommend.

If you are looking for any quality in your work, you need to go to bare metal, especialy if the paint on the doors is laquer.
