: Does this sound like a fair trade?
Hey guys I haven't posted here in a few years, but I am looking for a little input from all of you. Right now I have a 95 formula that I love, but there is a chance that I might be able to trade it for a 70 chevelle. I will give you a little info on my car and the chevelle to see if you guys think it is a good straight up trade or if he should give me money or i should give him money.
95 formula black,t-tops
-LT1
-6 speed
-ram air hood
-headers
-comp cam 224/230 roller cam
-1.6 roller rockers
-sub frame connectors
-3.73s
car ran 13.5 at 106 on street tires before cam and roller rockers. Haven't been to the track since the cam (should run 12.7 or so with sticky tires)
the only problem with the car is that the noise could use a repaint.
1970 chevelle.
I don't know much about it. It is my friends, friend's car. But my buddy know what he is talking about when it comes to car and this is what he told me.
-396 with some work done to it
-4 speed M-21
-not sure what rear it has (10 or 12 bolt)
-car has no rust except a little hole in the floor
-rest of the car is very solid
-needs paint badly
-interior in good shape
what do you guys think. should i trade my formula for the chevelle (i am guessing everyone will be a little biased to a chevelle)
thanks
Tom
71BBSSCONV Nov 23rd, 03, 4:51 PM If it needs paint badly, then the rest of the car is probably in the same shape. Is the engine compartment nice or are all the inner fenders etc all rusty? If it needs paint real bad, & depending on the engine itself & a hundred other factors, it could be worth anywhere from 3 grand to maybe 6 or 7 grand tops.
Go on ebay & search for "chevelle" & click on highest priced & work your way down till you find one equivalent to the one you are looking at.
Now figure what your 95 is worth & you can figure it out from there.
Hope this helps.

thanks alot for the help. I am going by what my friends is telling me. He was just telling me that the paint is just old. I haven't seen the car yet. I am going to look at it sometime around thanksgiving. I think the engine compartment was painted not to long ago when he rebuilt the engine.
thanks

Chuck Nov 23rd, 03, 5:38 PM If all the rust in the car was taken care of, I don't think you'd see rust in the floor. Be very cautious. Check behind the rear fender well, Next to the rear window at the bottom corners, If it's a 10 bolt with a 396, it's "cobbed" together. This could be a $4,000 Malibu. The mark of a good car IS NOT that it has a great engine. Be sure all the stock parts are there and check AGAIN for rust. Look for little high spots in the paint, a sure sign of rust below the surface. This car might be full of bondo. Unless your friend knows the history of the car back as far as the faded paint, I'd be very leary. I might buy it but, a trade? You may give away more than you get.

Bob West Nov 23rd, 03, 8:20 PM If it has rust in the floor, you can damn sure bet there has been rust in the quarters. The floor in my car looks like brand new,but all fenders have rust beginning.
72ElCaminoSS Nov 24th, 03, 11:04 AM If the bird is your primary car, I wouldn't do it. Mainly because the CHevelle sounds more like a project than transportation. If this is only for a weekend car, I'd definitely check everywhere for bubbles and other signs of rust.
mvcmc Nov 24th, 03, 3:36 PM When you look at the Chevelle take a flat refrigerator magnet and use it to check for bondo on the body. Check the lower areas, doors, rocker panels, fenders, fender lips. Also, check the floor panels with an ice pick or some other pointed tool. Check the VIN to be sure it is a Malibu V8. Make sure it has front disc brakes. Check the rear end for a 12 bolt, boxed control arms and anti-sway bar. Check the fuel line for two lines; an inlet and return on the passenger side wher it goes through the frame. Check the numbers on the front engine pad for engine assembly date and VIN. For your info last year I bought a #3.5 rated 1970 Malibu with a 396 for $5700.00.
Steve_69 Nov 25th, 03, 5:09 AM "-car has no rust except a little hole in the floor"
Speaking from experience here and teh school of hard knocks, I thought I'd have to replace just a small section of one floor pan and be done.
"Where there's smoke, there's fire." I have been working for many months now replacing floor pands AND braces underneath. I had to learn how to weld and buy a MIG welder, learn how to work with sheet metal, found out where all rust can hide and what it can do and more.
Unless that's an unusual spot of rust caused by something unusual.... I'd be looking for rust everywhere. ESPECIALLY in the braces underneath the floor pans and trunk. Replacing pans is bad enough, replacing braces AND pans is a royal pain!

Zio Nov 25th, 03, 10:46 AM Thanks guys for all your help. Hopefully I will get to see the car over thanksgiving when the guy comes home from school. I am going to have to check the car out my self. But i misunderstude my friends. there is no rust in the floors. He said the only hole he saw in the floor was for the 4 speed. So i guess I will just have to wait and see what it looks like in person.
thanks
