I am trying to quickly decide on a Red to paint my 71. I was thinking about GM "Torch Red" however, I have noticed on the paint chips that it looks like there are several shades of "Torch Red". Is this true? If so how can I be sure my paint man is using the color I want?

Are you sure the "different" colors of torch red arent the variations of the color? The best thing to do is look at a vehicle that is torch red( like my Monte SS) and get the paint code, then go to a paint store and look at their variance chart for the color to get the one u want

how much difference is there?
the problem with looking at paint chips is 2 one is they are only the size of a 1" square. there is going to be a difference from the chip usually not a huge difference but sometimes there will be. the best thing to do is get a pint of the paint you want spray the primer your going to use then the paint and then the clear if you really want to be exact spray it at the same gun pressure and air temp because these are all things that can alter paint
if you look at my car the paint code was a cross match for fathom blue when we sprayed the base it looked great but when we sprayed the clear it lightened up the color i believe the color should be a little darker

If you want a nice bright red you could paint your 71 the same color as my 72 I chose 1993 camaro bright red(I don't know the paint code)it is very close to cranberry red which was an original color for chevelles except this color is a little bit brighter. The one main question I get at car shows and cruise-ins is what color red is that, and it does look great on my 72 SS with black stripes. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif

<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>Steve...be careful on choosing your color. paint color can vary shade to shade just by raising or lowering gun pressure by 5 lbs. Best to get color code from a vehicle with original first paint job.

I went to the new and used car lots at the area chevy dealers and found a color I liked and asked for the color code. The salesman was glad to tell me.
