I have a 72 SS convertable that had the quarters replaced long ago. The body seams between the trunk and the back window were filled in smooth.I'm getting the car painted and need to know if this is correct or if the seams are recessed like the hard tops?

Steve,
That question has been asked of me at quite a few shows. Have seen some restored converts with seems installed. Also have had people tell me that all models had seems and my convert is wrong. But from what I have gathered from looking at original untouched converts and seeing cars built by well know chevelle people, that most GM A bodied converts had filled in seams so back area is smooth with no seams showing. Now there is always exceptions to the rule, but thats my story& I'm sticking to it! Jim.

I am right now in the process of a paint job on my 71 Malibu Convertible. The car has been stripped to the metal, I have also redone the lead fillings that you talk about. I am 100% sure that this joint came filled and ground flat from the factory. This joint consists of overlapping sheetmetal which is arc welded in a recess, and then covered with lead.

That's right, they are not "pinch welds" like on a coupe or sedan, they are "lap" welds. So they couldn't have been seen ever, because there is no "seam" with the lap weld to be seen!

My 69 SS convertible had lead filled flush joints. I am not the original owner , but the body looked to be untouched in the trunk area.
