I have a friend that can get me parts for my car real cheap. I want to convert my 66 Malibu to power steering. He told me he could get the gear box for $128, and the pump for $50 "BRAND NEW". Is this a good deal? Is there anything else I need to convert my car over? Thanks

I guess the pump sounds ok if it comes with all of the brackets, but the box doesn't sound like a deal at all. I have gotten power boxes for next to nothing and spent 15 bucks on a rebuild kit, and in about 2 hours had a like new box.

The gear box is new, so I will not have to rebuild anything. Is this still to much? I looked online, and can't find a gearbox for less than $300.

If your doing it make sure its' a quick ratio box. The stock box is IMHO junk 10 turns lock to lock with no feel.

No this is a quick ratio 21/2 lock to lock

I paid 200 bucks for my box, not sure if its 2 1/2 turns lock to lock, but he said it was the quickest quick ratio box i could have (i can't make u-turns to easy anymore) but it sure is sweet driving around.

It sounds like a good deal if they are new and come with the brackets to mount to your block.

Does the Malibu have the remote reservoir like the Chevelle's? If so, the expensive parts are the can's (that go around the pump) and the brackets and the reservoir. When I converted mine 7 years ago, I spent $300 just for the pump, can, reservoir and brackets. That was with out the gearbox. Look to OPG for more info.
