One of my friends told me that if I leave the car in primer because it's so porus (probably spelt wrong) it will soak in moisture. Is this true? I see guys in primered car all the time. Does it matter on the type of primer?

The car WILL NOT be driven in anything less than perfect conditions, so does this apply to me? Thanks for the help…

Primer is there for two reasons, to adhere to the bare metal surface and provide a surface for the topcoat to adhere to. It's nature is to be porous and to absorb. Unfortunately that means that besides paint, it will readily absorb water, dirt oil, grease and anything that the environment rains down onto it.
A car driven and exposed to the elements in nothing but primer is not a good idea at all.
Moisture will be absorbed into the primer immediatley and go straight for the steel. that spells RUST.

There is somewhat of an exception to this rule. If you use a top-quality urethane primer, apply 2-3 good coats and leave it un-sanded, it will provide a fairly good barrier to the elements. There are a lot of older Street Rods running around that way on purpose nowadays. You can even buy the urethane primers tinted in many colors. Martin Senour has a great product line of these tintable primers. I still wouldn't leave it parked in the rain & snow, but it will provide you with enough protection for a while and look good at the same time. If you go with a cheap lacquer primer, you're just asking for trouble.
