: Help on exhaust noise

I’m tired of the noise! graemlins/angry.gif

I drive my car an average of 650 miles a month and the exhaust noise has pushed me over the edge. I’m not sure what mufflers are on the car but they’re 16” long and loud. Cruising on the highway you can’t talk to another person in the car without loosing your voice. My existing setup is 1-3/4” headers (no leaks), and 2-1/2” stock pipes to the back bumper. I’d like to keep a little of the big block rumble and I really don’t want to pay the Flowmaster price if I can get around it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Bubba

How much of your stock system do you want to keep? Jegs makes a full dual kit for about $160 or so, several of us have them and I like mine. It's easy, and not too expensive, nice sound.

Summit Turbo Mufflers, 15 bucks a piece, great rumble at idle and quiet when driving and sound great when you floor it. I had the 3" versions on my 406 sbc. They appear to be very well made too.

I like Dynomax Super Turbos - decent price, good sound, great flow numbers.

I also have the summit turbos with the 2.5in flowmaster pipe kit on my convertible. With my 3.73 they are still a little noisy on the highway for my taste though. Although the conv. is probably a little louder anyway.
You might want to look into putting 3inch back to the muffler, I have heard that is supposed to help lower the sound inside the car also.

Bubba,
Do you have a "H" pipe for a balance tube between the pipes? If not try it, I think it will lower the tone.

I agree with Adam, I think the Summit turbos would be a good choice. They are not real loud and will be quieter than your current setup, and if you were to add an H pipe with them it would probally make it even quieter since it will help smooth out the pulses. When I come down to your house to have you help me install my new bumpers I will take you for a ride in my 72 with it's dynomax race magnum bullets and turn downs I'm sure you'll like it. ;)

Cecil,
I want to keep all of the stock exhaust. It’s all new with the exception of the mufflers and I love the way the stock chrome tips look under the bumper.

Right now I’m leaning towards the Dynomax Hemi Super Turbo mufflers along with an H pipe. Has anyone used these mufflers before? I believe these mufflers should be a little quieter than the Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers. Much to Brandon’s disappointment I like cars that are just a little louder than stock.

Thanks for all the responces,

Bubba

I suggest running open headers :D . Seriously though, Gardner Exhaust has a great product for classic muscle cars and a great fit from what I hear too. I haven't used them, but I believe it is a high-quality reproduction of an original manifold and exhaust system. Here is a link. Hope this helps. The site might be down due to technical problems I think.

I'm using the Dynomax Hemi Super Turbo mufflers w/o a h-pipe on my El Camino and they are a whole lot quietier than the Flowmasters on the Malibu.

20" or 22" if you want it subtle. These guys have a 22" offset/offset if thats how your current system is setup, but no 20" muffler...

Summit Turbos, baby.

Have Flowmaster Am. Thun. 2.5 inch with the Summit Turbos on there and it sounds pretty tame behind the BB.

Does anybody have a sound clip of their car with the Summit turbos? I would like to hear them at idle.
