Hey all,

I just installed my new motor and headers and now I need to get it to the muffler shop (20 miles away)I cut my old exhaust back to the cross member
and need to have it connected to the new headers.
What's a temp solution so I can drive it there ?

Well you could just clamp some collector reducers to some mufflers and bolt them to your headers or you could just drive it and stay off the gas.If you get stopped just tell'em where your headed.

Just tie your pipes to the trans crossmember, some flexible coat hanger wire will work in a pinch.

For 20 miles you might want some ear plugs. If you see a cop just let up on the go pedal. Even if you do get pulled over if you explain that you are on your way to the muffler shop, they surely would just let you go.

Be light on the go pedal though, or might just get into a lot of trouble.

This is just what i would do and have done in the past. The best method would be too call the tow truck out, but I could never deny myself the chance to run with open exhaust, hell I ran the "bu" without exhaust for a good month, never had a problem.

I think his exhaust is from the rear back up to the x-member,so he still can't connect with flexible hose.He still needs some way to connect them to the new headers.

I'd probably risk it, and drive,...
But I'm not the smartest guy I know either. smile.gif

I've always just "gone for it" and drove pipeless to the Exhaust Shop. I have been pulled over once and the Officer was polite enough to let me go after a short explanation (which I'm sure any of them would do unless you got REALLY unlucky). I'll tell you it's kind of fun watching people stare at you as you go by. Just make sure everything else is in good working order in case you do get pulled over.

Maybe you could just buy a set of those cheap glasspack mufflers that bolt right up to the collector.
I've just driven the car to the shop, but it is only like 3 miles from my garage. ;)

Drive it with open headers. I've done it before and no one bothered me. Besides, they are loudest on acceleration, they will quiet up a bit when you get some speed and ease off the throttle.

run it open... wide open!!! You could always just put it in neutral and coast past cops, or churches, or old folks homes, or schools, or hot chicks... wait, chicks dig pipes! VROOM! VRROOOOMMM!!! :D

my muffler shop had "loaner" glass packs. they were welded to header flanges so all i did was bolt them on. they scraped the pavement a couple of times but it was quieter....ask your shop.

I haven't done this myself, but have heard the cheap and 'quite' way around this is to use some tin cans (soup or veggies) to use as an adapter between your headers and the mufflers.

Wire them up as others have suggested. Let the cans take the beating and tightening not your collectors or muffs. - This probably is dependand on the size of your tin can, collector and muffler inlet sizes.

It's a darn shame I can't spell quiet....

I am having a flashback on this! This is exactly how my 67 Camaro got stolen. I was afraid to drive it 20 miles with open headers to the shop I wanted to use, so I drove it to a Midas shop that was very close to my house. It got stolen from their shop graemlins/sad.gif

Drive that sucker wherever you want. Don't worry about the cops...

Just go for it! If you get stopped and tagged, it'll just be a "fixit ticket" (at least around here). After the pipes are done, find a cop and have them sign off on the repair. No more ticket.

what i did was use some flexable high heat aluminum and it worked great same idea as the tin cans but this is easyer to use to match up two different size pipes.
