Hi I run about a 100 miles on my 454 and I use about 1/3 of a quart of oil. Is this about right. Thanks

My 396 L78 uses a quart every 1000 miles. I have owned quite a few hi performance cars from 1966 to present and they all used about the same amount of oil. Of course it depends how you drive em. I don't baby my cars.

My 454 in the super heavy (motor home) burned a qt every 1200 miles.
Switching over to the royal purple 15-40 it is now 2500 + per qt.
My newest super heavy 454 (2500 pounds) heavier seems to luv it also BUT not e'nuf miles on it to give you a critical report.
Try a syn oil out just might help, mobil 1 is another goodie. Good luck

Can you use synthetic oil in a motor that has used regular oil with out problems? or is it vise versa?

Syn oil can be used with even a higher milage engine. One of the problems is that it will find the weak spots (leak wise) and drip. I found out that by the second oil change (4500) miles just how good the oil is. The person who just bought my smaller M.H. just reported in !!!!
1200 miles and NOT a drop consumed. Now if your not happy you can just change back to the previous oil of choice. My big (super heavy) goes on a long & hot-hard towing a small car trip starting 8-22 and i hope that 454 does well in the oil control as the other critter does. Good luck.

Hi Eddie
After the first shot of syn i let it run for at least 3K miles.
On the second change i (being cheap) run the syn 5-6 K.

Eddie your welcome
300 i dont know if 20-50 is good for you or not.
Since you live in a totally different climate then i do (low desert) i would check in with some cold climate people on this board for opinions.
I can run the 15-40 year round here in the warm and extra warm climate.
My ricer likes mobile 1 10-30 year round and it's royal purple 15-40 for the Elky (355) and the super heavy (454). Good luck and perhaps the northern folks will chime in with the oil & weight used.

Any visible leaks?

Had same problem with mine but it was a leaky oil pan and dipstick tube and breather blow and....

Also, if you don't use a PCV setup, try it. It pretty much eliminated my problems. PCV one side, breather in the other. Just a thought.

20-50 is a bit heavy, isnt it?
