Are these moldings only on Malibu's or were they available on SS Models? I have noticed in the different restoration catalogues they only list these for Malibu models. If they are on one's SS, is this a sure sign of a "clone" and deductions at show's?

They were not available on SS cars

It depends on who is putting on the show I suppose, it would be their call.

Dean,

Thanks for the feedback. I suspected this to be the case. I recently bought this 70 because I thought it was an authentic SS. Without build sheet I based this assumption because the numbers on the 396/350HP (CTX Engine code I believe...from memory) matched the numbers on the VIN Tag. I was pretty sure from my readings that the 396 (402) only was offered only in SS packages in 1970. The car was completely restored about 6 or 7 years ago. I suppose it is possible that when the car was restored that this could have been added...for looks (I personally do like the looks better. The car has power front discs, 3:55 posi rear end and anti-sway bar which in and of itself would not indicate it was an SS as it left the factory but with the matching numbers motor I felt pretty comfortable with the purchase...I hate now to start having second thoughts just because of a rocker molding. What do you think? Any other telltale signs I can look for??

1970 also had fender/door mouldings that ran across the top edge on non-SS cars. Check to see if you have a bunch of filled holes where these mouldings would've been. Don't check if you're afraid to find them. The best telltale point would be just below the quarter window as the other panels (fender and door) could've been replaced with parts from a non-SS car.

My documented '70 SS 396 convertible has the rocker moldings.

Thanks Riffers70 and Alan. The links have been most helpful Two things specifically have helped me feel more comfortable that this is a true SS (other than it is a matching numbers 396 ... although there was indication in one of the links that this "could" have been altered.). The first being; My car is a non-gage package (Bench Seat 4 speed) car and it has the correct dash...3 large "pods" and idiot lights in the correct location intead of the rectangular speedo on the Malibu. It is also not a transplanted Monte dash as was possilby indicated.
The Second being that there are apparently much better documented cars then mine that have the rocker trim piece and apparently no indication of it on their build sheet. It also appears that many other odd things were done in 70 that would preclude one from saying for certainty that no 70SS left the facory with Rocker trim pieces.

Without the build sheet I will appparently never know but if this Black on Black beauty was cloned, it was done pretty well and certainly the matching numbers motor and other correctness would lend some credibility.

Kevin,

Thanks for your input also. I will check your info out when I get home today but my recollection is that I am OK here if I understand what you are telling me.

I am no pro by any means but this is my first venture into the 70 model. I also currently have a Butternut Yellow 67 SS396 350HP Matching Numbers car (138 VIN) and have learned some over the past few years on how to document the cars. When the guy I bought the 70 from didn't have the build sheet I went srictly on the matching numbers motor and a few other telltale features

Thanks again
