: Fuel Lines: 325, 350, vs 375 hp Power Plants:
Mike O'H Jul 7th, 03, 5:28 PM I noticed at CB03 that it seemed as thought the 325 & 350 hp powered '69 SSs had 2 "lines" coming from the tank into the engine compartment while the 375 hp cars had just one.
The 325 & 350 hp cars had the "second" line going thought/to/from the in-line filter while the 375 cars have no such filter [and therefore, no line].
Why the difference? ....or in other words: what about the '375 hp cars doesn't care about needing/wanting the [return?]line? ...what about the 325 & 350 hp cars think they need the other line?
...just wondering.
Any feedback would be great.
Thanks,
Mike O'H
69ssmike Jul 7th, 03, 5:33 PM I think the 375 HP cars have a bigger can on the fuel pump and they have the filters inside the lines on the carb.
fastss396man Jul 7th, 03, 5:57 PM The fuel lines are definitly different.
The 375 HP cars have one feed line which is also larger than the 325 & 350 HP cars. The fuel filters are just inside the fuel bowl connection on the 375 HP car.
The second smaller line on the 325 & 350 HP cars is a fuel return line back to the fuel tank.
Also speeking from experiance, the 375 HP cars suck the fuel up so fast there isn't any left to return to the tank! :D
...thanks guys! It's always fun to "..do some learn'in" on the site smile.gif

Don_Lightfoot Jul 8th, 03, 12:00 AM Now I certainly don't want to dispute what my dear friend Brian has said here ;) , but I believe the main fuel lines for all 396 cars (in 69 anyway) were 3/8". The return line for the 325 and 350 cars was smaller than the main line.
I'm sure it was just Brian's grammar or how he intended to word it smile.gif

This is what I thought was correct...
Standard Feed line for all except 375 Hp = 5/16in
Standard Return line for all except 375HP = 1/4in
Feed line for 375 Hp = 3/8in and no return line.
In doing more research I am begining to believe you are technically correct regarding 396s.
So the 5/16 Feed line listed is for small block V8s and L6s only?
Do you have the beer iced down for the weekend yet? graemlins/beers.gif
DaleM Jul 8th, 03, 3:04 AM I didn't studder did I?

Studder? You mean stutter? I assume you meant it metaphorically and not disparagingly? ;)
Anyway, in the new Year One catalog (picked up at CB03), they list a number of reproduction fuel pump-to carb fuel lines for 1969 Chevelles.
1. 396/375 and COPO 427/425 - 3 piece line set. Includes one 3/8" feed line and two 5/16" carb lines.
2. 396/325 and 396/350 Quadrajet - 3 piece line set. Includes two 3/8" feed lines and one 1/4" return line.
3. 1967-69 350/295 4-bbl - line is 3/8" in diameter.
4. 1969 350/255 and 300 - 3 piece line set. Includes two 3/8" feed lines and one 1/4" line and two "S" clips.
In fact, after 1968, there's nary a 5/16" line to be found in their catalog except from the Y-block to carb on dual feed carbs. Are all their non-375 fuel pump-to-carb lines wrong?
fastss396man Jul 8th, 03, 3:15 AM Dale,
Thanks for clearing this up. I did some more research and thought I'd have time to edit... Any how OPG still shows 5/16 line, but only 3/8 sending units for 69'. Thinking the 5/16 line may be used for small block V8s and or L6s?
I was in the process of editing but not before you corrected me. Don knows me better than that... smile.gif
When is Al going to install spell check? Or should I just go to bed at a reasonable hour and not stay up late making an a$$ of myself? :D
Good nite! graemlins/boring.gif
thr062 Jul 8th, 03, 5:36 AM Here is my .02. My 375 HP 66 has one 3/8" fuel line, no return. You can't always go with what the OPG or Year One catalog says, there not 100% right. smile.gif
Will
Don_Lightfoot Jul 8th, 03, 9:12 AM Gee Dale, if you keep this up you're going to make me go get the dictionary :D
Brian - yes, the beer is being chilled as we speak. Unfortunately I've had no time whatsoever over the past two weeks to do any surfing in here. I'll probably get punished by the Club for being in here a little bit over the last couple of days graemlins/clonk.gif

Will I know they're not always right but lack of info on any specialty tube mfgs site left them about the only game in town. It just struck me odd that only the 375hp would have had 3/8" lines so it piqued my curiosity. I've had a bunch (well, four) of 67's with both 325hp and 350hp engines and they all had 3/8" lines.
I've been as guilty as the next guy in stating a "fact" when in reality, that's the way it was on my car and that may or may not have been the way it is on all cars. Not always the case I'm afraid :(
