There have been a lot of questions recently about what all makes the horn contact work in the steering wheel of a '65 so I took some pictures and worked up a web page. I assume this is pretty much the same for '64 steering columns. This is for the Malibu standard wheel without tilt. The wood wheel would have a somewhat different set up and the Chevelle 300 wheel would have a horn button instead of a horn ring.

Anyway, I hope this helps.

Very well written Rich. *Insert happy jumping things here*
The only thing I didn't see is a couple of sentences about how the horn contact finds ground. Maybe I missed it. A good column ground doesn't mean anything. The ring gets a ground through the shaft. A fairly common mistake in troubleshooting.

IIRC, there is a copper link on the steering rag joint to provide ground through the shaft.

Thanks Rich,

That's a very usefull tutorial. Unfortunately I don't think anything past the installation of the switch applies to me as I'm using an aftermarket steering wheel and hub. :(
