my water pump let go and it looks like I have to replace my H2o pump, cooling fan, clutch and radiator. I was looking into the truck GM#52470841 radiator. the best price I found was $185 from gmparts direct. has anyone ordered from them and how long did it take to receive it. my other concern is that when I went to order it from a local supplier(allied auto) they said that there was a new number. when the rad showed up it was copper brass. I believe that they order the spectra-shield products. my other option is too get this 1 I have recorred. how much $ does that run? my wife has been outa work for some time so money is tight but I wanna drive this thing. thanx mike

Hi Mike !

I got one of the aluminum radiators that you're talking about off of eBay for $60 !! (thanks Brandon ! aka RatONaStick)

Here is the link

eBay rediator (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2418900845&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOAB:US:6)

Yea, I know you're thinking what I was thinking - this is going to be some rebuild, reclaimed POS but it was packaged in the Delco packaging brand new. The Delco # is 20778

I ran it for a week with my 402 (before the cam got wipped out) and it ran very cool never getting over 180*. It drops right in and the only odd thing is that it has a hose connection on the radiator just under the cap on the side of the tank that you can hook your heater hose up to ir just cap off. It has cooler line hook ups for an auto trans on the pass side too.

The place that I got it from shipped it to me in 2 days. For $60 it was worth the gamble and I'm real glad I took it.

You might want to check the "see my other auctions" part on the eBay link to see if they have any more of them or just call them and see what they charge direct.

Good luck - hope this helps !

Tom,
Is the aluminum rad. two, three or four core? Does it have the plastic side tanks? Any pics?

Are the plastic side tanks desirable? I never thought about it. Don't they use metal(?) tanks in most applications? Sounds like a good deal if it works like it should. I think racer1320 uses it.

thanx tom,

Way to go Mike ! How much did they want for it ?

I got the hoses from NAPA because they have the Gates crossreference info.

By the way - don't freak out when you get the radiator and see the cuts in the support pieces ! I thought I got a second or something but everyone I talked to that has one says that is correct and for expansion. I even checked on at the Chevy dealer and it was that way. They wanted $325 for one !

As for it having plastic side tanks - almost all of the new radiators have the plastic side tanks and they go alot more miles than you and I will put on these cars. And for $60 you can't beat it even if it only lasts 5 years.

hi tom,
they sold it to me for the same price as you. actually, I ordered 1 and then received a call about 2 hours later saying that they didn't have 1 left at that price. the guy said he would be selling it for a big loss. he was from cali. I called the # from the ebay ad and talked to a lady. she said they found 1 in fla. and could have it shipped out in 2 days. also for the same price. so hopefully i'll see it by wed. I picked up the hoses but man they look small. I have this feelib that they might not be correct but we'll see. thanx again for the heads up. mike

Do you guys know if that's it for that piece? Are they all sold out? I was thinking about picking one up on a "Buy it Now" in a few weeks. Hope they haven't dried up. I'm trying to get my cooling system upgraded and that would be a nice cheap start. Any info would be appreciated. smile.gif

Even at $139 it's still a steal for this radiator !

It is a direct drop in - NO changes. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Does it come with the mounting brackets and everything already welded up? If so, that is a steal - but you can get almost the exact same one from Summit for just about the same price (new $139 price at least) if it doesn't come with the brackets.

remember,
I think this is for 68-72 chevelles that don't have mounting brackets. I believe it is still a great deal as it also has the transmission cooling lines if using an automatic. so far i have heard nothing but good about this setup but have not seen for myself. good luck

This radiator is a direct replacement for the one you will pull out of your car. Everything is the same - no fabbing up brackets or anything.

Here is a pic of it installed.

looks pretty sweet, glad it worked out for you. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

one advantage of this radiator having plastic tanks and aluminum core is the fact that it is really light compared to a stocker. i believe this is the main reason for racer1320 using it.

unfortunately this radiator wont work for 64-67 as it lacks the flanges to bolt it to the core support. it will only work for 68-72.

I called the 1-888-252-0333 today, they said the price was $139 BUT it was for a replacement one that was copper/brass..They didn't have the alum/plastic one anymore....I called around and found a place that offered one for $146 but would take 3days to get here (KC)Should be here by Monday.I THINK she said it was by Modine (sp)...

They all said this radiator was only 1 3/8" thick  IS this going to be enough for a 454 w/air?

Starting to get in the price range of some of the aluminum cross flow radiators with aluminum tanks on e-bay. The ones with the blue filler neck. Nice radiators. I think they are a bolt on for you later model guys. Also, there is a guy who sells BECOOL radiators at half price with a simple little blem. I bought one. His name is Don. Good guy and great radiator for the price.

OK, the radiator is made by Thermo-components,in Montgomery,Alabama. The part# is 04-0242... I think the phone# is 334-277-1810.It probably can be ordered by any radiator shop. It's probably a copy of the GM one.It looks just like the one in the photo's above.I haven't tried to put it in yet as I'm not ready.I used the Gm # to get it.I paid $145 for it..
Hope this helps..

Flywheel-Thanks for that info. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Was it a 2 or 3 row you purchased and was the GM number you used to order it the one mentioned earlier in this post(GM#52470841)?
Thanks again. graemlins/beers.gif

when you order the radiator make sure it is the aluminum one. my parts guy told me it had an updated part # and it was a copper brass one. best to double check. mike

Yes, I used the GM part#,They cross referenced it to the brand I got.I found the same thing as rattuned did.Ask if it's an aluminum on,some are brass now... :(

67johnny,I'm not sure what you'd call it  It looks awfull thin to me,maybe like a 2 core  but being aluminum I guess it cools alot better. It looks like the one in the picture above from team5150

I use it on a '69 396 w/auto and air. Hard to get it over 160, had to change the thermostat to a 180 to get the thing to warm up. It runs about 185 here in the summer. OVER 100 EVERY day.

OK, again.....

Radiator ('91-'95 P30 Step Van)
GM # 52470841
Delco # 20907 or 20778 (same part)

Hoses (84-86 Malibu/El Camino)
Gates # 2104 upper and 21324 lower

Cushions ('93 P30 Step Van)

I guess some of the p/n's have changed, don't know. I did this swap 2 years ago.

I guess some of the p/n's have changed, don't know. I did this swap 2 years ago. I just did the swap this weekend and the part number for the upper Gates hose is incorrect. The correct number is 21204. Looks like a digit was just omitted by accident in a previous post. The Dayco numbers are 71029 for the upper and 71139 for the lower respectively.

All I can say is this swap is everything they say it is.......I had a 5 core copper/brass unit and it dropped my cruising temps 20 degrees in similar weather.

Thanks,

Tony
