: 67 Dash Strip
tenacity Jun 29th, 03, 4:33 PM I am in the process of swithcing my dash strip on my Malibu to the after market SS strip.
Is there a difference between a Malibu strip and an SS strip? On my Malibu strip, the lights, wiper and lighter are held on by the metal chrome bezel pieces, but this "new" one has them already "built-in". As a result, I can barely get the lights on, the lighter went on without the trim and the wiper won't go on at all. Is there a difference in switches on an SS?
I know this has ben addressed before, (CHADH5), but I could not find a post with a
rocks66ss Jun 29th, 03, 6:38 PM The only difference is the malibu had the wood grain, and the SS had the black textured surface, the switches are the same.

Click on my int, pick and you can see them.
I am wondering if I have a 1966 strip?
bb67H-D Jun 29th, 03, 7:49 PM You will need to get the proper hardware from a SS doner car as the switches on the SS 50' strip are held on completely different than the malibu 50' strip, believe me I know, I did the conversion on my '67 many years ago but I used gm nos and used '67 parts.
Bottom line the switches are the same but the fastening hardwares are different.
Big Block Dave Jun 29th, 03, 8:55 PM The two strips are VERY different.....as yopu have already noticed, the bezels are cast into the face of the SS strip, and as stated above, you need donor parts.
I made my own SS dash strip by taking some bumper step pad for a truck and stenciling it over the Malibu woodgrain, cut it out, and then stuck it on....VIOLA.....poor man's SS strip for $5, and only the true connosieur will know the difference.
I can email you pics if you like

I am wondering if I have a 1966 strip? A 66 Velle strip is different from the 67 - and not just the Malibu/SS difference. The 67 has a larger dash opening for the collapsible column and the wiper switch was moved to the right about ½’ on the 1967 dash.
rocks66ss Jun 29th, 03, 11:12 PM Dale,
I was under the impression that the only difference was the placement of the switches between 66 and 67, I thought the switches were the same in how they mounted between the Malibu and SS, Was I wrong in that assumption?

I can email you pics if you like Dave if you cold email me the pics that would be great. I don't think I will be able to find the donor parts I will need.
Thanks,

Rocky The switches themselves are the same but the Malibu uses a chrome pot-metal bezel to hold the switches in. On the SS, the "bezel" is molded as part of the plastic strip.

Do you know what holds the switches in place and what I will need for the conversion?

Greg, I don't believe there is any difference in the switches or their position from a Malibu to an SS (they use the same metal dash base). What you are most likely experiencing is the crappy fit of the reproduction piece. I just did battle with my 66's reproduction chrome strip yesterday (I did win in the end). I had to trim one of the mounting stud reinforcements and try to shift the piece to one side to split the misalignment in the holes. I still had to struggle to get the lighter in, but I did get it done. Good Luck!!

bb67H-D Jul 4th, 03, 3:29 PM If you want to use the supersport 50" strip you will need the fastening hardware[to hold the switches in] from a SS doner car.
