I bought a new Sharpe Cobalt 1.4 HVLP gun which I Plan to paint my car with. The primer I have (Dupont Uro) calls for a 1.6-1.8 gun. Will something terrible happen if I use this gun to spray this primer?

No Rob, in fact it will dry/cure a little faster and it will lay down flatter.
The 1.4 tip will "break up" the primer better.
You have got to start visiting one of my favorite sites >>>>

On the site you can get a video called "Painting 101", I havn't seen it but I hear raves on it. Check it out. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Also Sharpe has a GREAT website for they're stuff, and a message board for just such questions.. www.sharpe1.com (http://www.sharpe1.com) I bought my 998 HVLP and it's working GREAT for Primer but it has a 1.5 fluid tip.. Looks like a garden hose compared to the 1.3 HVLP Low Volume Platnium I bought http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Normie, you are right the 1.5 998 will put out a bunch more material than the 1.3 Platinum. But that is not always good, even with "it's only" primer.
I did a test once when I had a guy who was "bombing" on the primer to heavy and blaming the primer for it's slow dry.
He shot a piece of bare metal three coats, in his semi heavy manner (he was trying to "hold back" because I was watching, I can only imagine how he was spraying it before I got there)
I had only one gun with me that day, my 1.3 Platinum so I used it to spray my three med light coats.
After it dried (which mine was much faster at drying/cureing) I found with an electronic mil gauge that MINE was thinker by .1 Mil!
You see his was all full of solvent and when all that solvent flashed off, it shrank down. Mine was atomized better so when it hit the panel most of the solvent was blowing off and when it flashed less had to leave. Less shrinking means less sand scraches, less color coat die back, ect.
So that 1.4 or 1.5 tip is fine, but don't apply it heavy just because you can. It may be costing you.

I've done three to four light (almost fog) patterns.. I know what you say about heavy.. I'm deathly afraid of runs and sags so I am applying as lightly as possible. Plus I have the 998 pressure feed, atomization is good and coverage is pretty even throughout the 6" fan.. So A few "Quick" passes and I just have a light coverage with the 1.5. I have the 1.3 for the finish work, but wanted a versatile gun for all grades of primer. Learned ALOT about painting from the discussion board at sharpe, I think I read almost every post in the gun and paint sections http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif But keep tossing the knowledge martinsr and I'll be glad to learn all you have to offer http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

I've been out of the painting for so long I would have never guessed they changed styles of guns. Gravity feed, huh? Just might have to try it.
I have a Bink's No.7 gun that has put down many a fine paint job. Bought it back about 1982 or so. Still does the job. I've never even run primer through it. Is this still a good gun or am I still living in the past? http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

You'd be impressed on the less paint consumptions.. And the atomization is much better.. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif not too mention both of my guns only consume 7.9 CFM of air at full operating settings.. My little compressor can handle that!
