I am ready to intall the vinyl top on my 68. What's the best way to get the wrinkles out before installing, and the best adhesive to use. Also, does the vinyl wrap all around the drip rails, or just on the top?

The best way to get wrinkles out of vinyl, is with heat. Laying it out in the sunlight is probably the best way with something that big. Getting the wrinkles out not as important as you would think. The wrinkles will come out by stretching the fabric when your installing it.
You will want to use a commercial type contact cement like the one Formica makes/recommends for their products. Its stronger than the spray can type that 3M makes.
The vinyl should rap over the top of the gutter, but only about 1/8 down from the top. If it was rapped all the way around, you would never get the chrome on.

Thank you Bill. I wqas going to go to the local upholstery shop to get the glue. I think they do tops, so I thought they might have the good stuff. Thank you for the tip.

They use a pressure pot to spray the glue.

You need to make sure that you mark where the seams go so that you get it in place.

Let the pro at the local upholstery shop do it in his spare time. He shouldn't charge you too much, and you'll get a much better job and be better satisfied with it.

I have been trying to do everything myself on this project. It has been a great experience. I have done things I never tried before, like replacing the quarters myself, and all the mechanicals. The only thing I didn't do myself, was the paint. I was affraid of too much dust in my back yard. It's really part of the fun to do it yourself. So my next step is the top.

You don't need a pro. If you can put your pants on in the morning, you can install a vinyl top.

You don't need a pres pot to spray contact cement. I use an old DeVilbiss siphon gun when making/glueing counter tops with no problems. It can be reduced with lacquer thinner, but probably won't be necessary.

It really is easy. I would say that a helper is needed for the novice. Watch your seams as you stretch it out. Keep them straight.
