Well, I'm going to be joining you guys in this forum area since I'm starting the resto on my most recent Elky purchase.

To remove the many layers of paint (been repainted four times) I'm using the 3M paint removal disks. These are the thick coated fiber kind.

First I started off using my 3/8" drill with an adapter bit - which was a very slow and tedious way to remove the paint.

Then I made an adapter to use these disks on a Makita right angle rotary sander - and the paint just flies right off. Which would normally seem to be a good thing, but I am concerned that the speed of the Makita sander may be more than is needed. It is no-load rated at 4,500 rpm and does not have a variable speed feature.

Anybody have any idea what the best rpm is for the 3M paint removal disks? I am using the "black" ones, which are less aggressive.

I've used 3M's Hook-It backed stripper discs with a 3 1/2" grinder with no problems. They do not fill up with paint like a sandpaper product and with the fine grade they do not gouge/grind the metal. I use them all the time for stripping paint. On thick coats I use a chemical stripper first to loosen, allow to dry thoroughly, then mechanically strip with the discs. Works great.
