Here's a story for you guys that own LS6's. Back in '70 when the guys would drive the Chevelles out from the plant, there would be times when they'd drag race 2 LS6 Chevelles up and down the road that went through GM from Park Road to Stevenson Rd (now there is no public access to the 2 streets). One day a guy lost it and hit a cement light post and totaled the car. This was a brand spankin new LS6 that never reached the dealer. I wonder if they fired the guy?

Don't know what colour it was. It was probably a rare colour and optioned to the hill. My neighbor is an Engineer at the Oshawa Plant and told me the story yesterday.

Here's another sad story from Canada I PDIed a Chevy Imala in 64 2dr HT 409 all the options that were available.I drove home at lunch to road test it 2 miles there and 2 back. The customer picked it up that night drove of the lot and was "T" boned right in front of the dealer ship...FRED

A good union man cannot be fired. Crashes or not. Incidents like this become bargaining chips at contract time.

This being a union plant, they probably fired the supervisor and promoted the driver.

Like 283v8 said, he probably did not get fired.

Here is a current day story at an Escort plant. ( The car is nothing to talk about but the incident is funny. I was actually there to see the aftermath a few years ago.)

At the final "vehicle check out" area, they drive the cars out to the lot as they await for transportation from the plant to the dealers.

Anyway, these lots are big. I mean REALLY BIG. Picture a parking lot that is about ten or more football fields big. A lot of times these lots are full of cars. It all depends on the delivery schedule and build schedules. Sometimes there are hickups and one gets ahead of another.

Anyway, I was working 6am-6pm during a launch of this vehicle and around 7am I was walking from one building to the next. Toward this final vehicle check point. Not a single car in any lot as far as the eye can see. Except this one car. The letter V can be easily made out but the front bumper, frame and hood. Airbag was deployed and the alarm and hazards were sounding/blinking.

It was the only thing out there and it hit the only telephone pole on the lot! I just about had the best laugh of my life!

I think the guy got suspended for a day or so. Probably even got paid.

Don't know how the union worked in years past but a few things have changed. At the GM S-10 plant in Shreveport, Louisiana, wrecking a vehicle driven off the assembly line is one of the FEW offences where a union member is instantly terminated.

Another note not related to Chevelles: I don’t remember the name of the S-10 Blazer with the turbocharged/intercooled V-6 but these vehicles were built at the Shreveport plant and shipped to an outside vendor for the fiberglass add-ons. These “trucks” were powerful enough to shear the four bolts attaching the backing plates/caliper mounts off the rear axle. Wonder could I do that with my big-block A-body?

I think you're talking about the syclones and typhoons manufactured by GM. They made a very small number of 'em because of that particular problem and another one with the u-joints (as in replacing them every 10k miles or something equally ridiculous).

Seen one of 'em move and they are un-#*%^#ing-believable. I'll give you phat props if you can make your Chevelle move like that http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif--Amanda

I guarantee that if you take today's technology, such as dual intercooled turbos, dual overhead cams, 4 valves per cyl, TPI, etc, and apply it to a 454-502, you will see some serious movement of any Chevelle.

Agreed DZ, but what was unique about these is I believe they were 4 wheel drive, 4 wheel steering. Yeah, they were quick, but anything with real muscle behind it would be quicker. But these things handled like you wouldn't believe AND they were quick.--Amanda
