: 69 Discussion time.....
66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Nov 3rd, 03, 9:50 AM http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2440977495&category=6164
We have not discussed any 69's in some time, and since many of us will be working on projects over the winter, I thought this slick example might be a good test case for what is right and what is not...as always, done for the purpose of knowedge base and that this is the forum for originality...this is without a doubt a very sharp car...what say you 69 folks...is it correctly restored?
Mike
Well right off the bat, the carb, intake, tires, and headers obviously aren't original. The air cleaner is wrong. Should be closed snorkel type on a 325 hp. The orange sticker on the radiator shroud shouldn't be there. The alt fan is the wrong color. The rear panel between trunk and bumper should be black. The accelerator pedal is wrong-I don't think stainless trimmed pedals were available on '69 Chevelles. Probably more but it's hard to tell much from those fuzzy photos.
rbarnes Nov 3rd, 03, 10:28 AM The most noticable to me, was that the rear panel between the bumper and trunk. It should be black not body color. The exhaust tips are hanging to low. The body side stripe seems to go to far back.Hinges should be natural. Master cylinder should be black. Wrong overflow hose. Trans cover appears to wrong. Should not have a zip tie on fuel lines. Wiper motor wires look a little funny. The gold on the booster and cover look like spray on.Just a few things that I see. These could be fixed easily. Depending on the final price, it looks like really nice car.
I don't see bleeder screws on M/C, no spring ring battery cables, PS hoses routed wrong, no clamp on PS hoses. No wire clip holding PS hoses together.
Don_Lightfoot Nov 3rd, 03, 12:04 PM Man, you guys are really on the ball today graemlins/hurray.gif
The exhaust exits too far inward, the tips should be about 3" farther to the outside. To accomplish this the tailpipes are probably hanging directly below the frame which might explain why they are too low as well
Oh those dreaded cowl grills, it shouldn't have any but I see two instead of the three that is normally seen, including mine ;)
I assume the rear seat belts are tucked down under the seat
69SUPERSPORT396 Nov 3rd, 03, 12:30 PM At least it has the correct rear AC compressor bracket.
There are no buttons on the seat upholstery.
Nice car though.
Rick
Is the upper radiator hose correct? Looks like it has some extra bends in it.

Bill Rose Nov 3rd, 03, 1:30 PM I would never buy this thing... The second plastic retaining strap that holds the windshield washer hose and wire harness to the driver side wheel well is missing. graemlins/angry.gif graemlins/angry.gif
Tom Hendricks Nov 3rd, 03, 2:28 PM Man !!! I'm never going to let you guys look at my car !!
66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Nov 3rd, 03, 2:39 PM Better sell it privately Tom.... :D
rbarnes Nov 3rd, 03, 2:55 PM I was just thinking, I plan on restoring my 69. Maybe I should post a bunch of pictures of my car. It would save a bunch time, letting everyone tell me what should be correct. I would take it all as constructive critisism. graemlins/beers.gif
rbarnes.....That is what I was thinking about too. How about it guys, would you be willing to pick ours apart for us?
d1_bradley Nov 3rd, 03, 3:13 PM Door panels don't "look right". No chrome piping or emblems...... But it is a nice car no doubt.
Don_Lightfoot Nov 3rd, 03, 3:25 PM I sincerely hope people viewing this are not taking it as "bashing or tearing it apart", that is not the intent as Mike originally posted. We hope to all learn things from these discussions, at least that is how I approach it. If my specific comments are too harsh then I apologize.
I have a very good idea of what is correct and not correct on my ride. Some of those things I couldn't care less about, while others are being upgraded or changed on a regular basis. Heck, I don't have the bread to do everything in one year. I've had mine for three years and have done some things each year and still have a list of some stuff I want to do. Who knows, maybe it will take me ten years. I'm not losing any sleep over it. I for one would be happy to help out anybody with their concerns if they wish.
TOM - after you sent me the pictures of your recent magazine article I've got a 20 page list if you care to review it :D
NOTE ADDED - Tony's car is so original that I think we could all learn something from it.
Man, I am in no way bashing the car. I am trying to learn all I can about these 69 cars. I think it is a real nice car. A LOT nicer than some I looked at before I bought mine.
rbarnes Nov 3rd, 03, 5:14 PM Same here. I just bought mine a month ago. You should see the list of things I need, and need to know. graemlins/clonk.gif If knowledge is power, then I want big block for a brain. I think I'm running a 6 cylinder now.
Tony- What kind of Harleys? If your interested go to www.americansteel.net (http://www.americansteel.net) then go to Destruction Zone. Pro Street Bad Boy. Built It in my basement.
Tom Hendricks Nov 3rd, 03, 5:19 PM I sure wasn't implying you guys were bashing. I was just spouting off !!! I still wouldn't want you guys looking at my stuff !! :D Hey Don, send me over the list so I can get to correcting !!
rbarnes Nov 3rd, 03, 5:23 PM It's all about the love of the cars. graemlins/beers.gif
Ray....Nice bike. I build Harleys for a living. I own my own shop. I will email you the ones I have.
Off topic abit.
There was a 1969 Chevelle Identical to this one at SuperChevy Indy this last July.I believe Von saw it there too.
It was drop dead gorgous, and sold very quickly after the show.
I don't think this is that Chevelle, though they could be twins.
Rick...Was the one at Indy done right? Do you know how much it went for?
plain 69 Nov 3rd, 03, 8:02 PM The interior is white which is wrong. It should be parchment which is not that white. The interior is nice though.
I believe Shanes Chevelle (Indy) sold for 45-50K,but I am not for sure on that.
Baker out of Peoria bought it,and He was asking 60K last I heard. He's a Flipper.
That Chevelle should have gone to Gold Class, IMO.
Rick, Yes I remember the car. It was close to perfect, if not. Looked like a fresh, no expense spared restoration. Won its class. The owners (man and wife) had matching orange and white "team" shirts too. I didn't know it was for sale then.
Any one want to take a shot at the selling price of the e bay one? I will guess 25,000.
69SUPERSPORT396 Nov 4th, 03, 10:23 AM eBay seems to be a different world. I say $25 - $30K IF it sells on eBay, which it probably won't.
Rick
rbarnes Nov 4th, 03, 11:02 AM I'll say the reserve is $27500.00. It's also posted here on TC classifieds, no price.
swm233 Nov 4th, 03, 2:30 PM very little correct about this car........
should have a Victor Jr intake
Holley 950Hp carb
MSD ignition
B&M megashifter
shift light tach
the list goes on.......
this is just so sad graemlins/sad.gif
fastss396man Nov 4th, 03, 8:14 PM ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ...
Sorry, I was sleeping. Got woke up by this Bright Orange SS though! :D
Just needs some TLC to bring it up to snuff. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
TXSS Nov 6th, 03, 10:30 AM Ouch, that’s my 69 you guys are bludgeoning to death. That’s ok I know it’s all in good fun and for the purpose of learning. I’ve done the same before. I have a near concourse correct 70 SS 396 un-restored numbers Chevelle so I am somewhat aware of this cars shortcomings. I purchased this car as a non-numbers matching car from a 17 year old who, I’m proud to say would not drive it in the rain. That made it kind of tough getting to school. When I told his dad that it was in fact a numbers matching car he jacked the price up 6K. The next day he called me back and told me that was not the right thing to do and sold it to me for the original asking price…good man. I struggled with whether to take to back to 100% original but decided that all the work and non-original items on the car had been done so well I would leave it as is and just replace a few of the most obvious incorrect items (chrome alt, chrome radiator support, chrome, chrome, chrome, red plug wires ect, ect) and do a world class rotisserie detail job on it. I don’t claim in the auction that it’s 1000 point car but do state that all the work was correctly done. Meaning done to the highest standards not necessarily to concourse standards. Non the less I love this car and wish I could keep it. However, 4 Chevelles is my limit. The fact is this is the most stunning Chevelle I have ever owned and it does run, drive and look like a new car. Someone is going to end up with one of the nicest Chevelles around.
You sure that wire tie on the fuel line is not factory correct? ;)
It’s been so long since my last posting I forgot my password...Formerly TXSS
66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Nov 6th, 03, 10:58 AM Glad to see you saw that posting your car was more a compliment than a slam., You have a good outlook about what is said here.
Good luck
Mike
For sure a compliment from me. I think you did an excellant job. I hope it brings what you are asking....Tony
rbarnes,
the hinges should not be natural, but rather grey phospate. And the master cylinder should not be black, but rather natural cast iron.
I have some NOS hood hinges in my NOS stash !
Nate
ACLineman Nov 7th, 03, 8:47 PM This is the funniest thread to date........You guys are great and glad to see the owner is taking it for what it is.....a learning at least for me.
The only thing that caught my eye (besides the beauty of a chevelle) was the lack of black below the trunk, the chrome trim gas peddle and didn't the SS have the radio antena on the rear quater panel? I don't know.
Tom I'm with you, I don't wanow them mine either, Although I would if I could just figure out how to post a damn picture under my name graemlins/clonk.gif
OK, OK Back panel is now painted correctly. I agree I should have never put the car out there with out having the back panel correctly painted. Looks much better now. With all of its non-correctness I still love this car and I’m going to be sad when it’s gone.
So, with great reluctance I’ve decided to turn you animals lose on my pride and joy. My un-restored numbers matching 1970 Chevelle SS 396 I know the caution sticker is not correct but is there for practical purposes and to keep 7 year old fingers safe. Remember un-restored but not un-detailed. Go ahead and give it your best shot. I’m sure I’m going to learn something I don’t want to know. Pic's aren't great but I think they will get the job done

ACLineman Nov 8th, 03, 10:01 PM Dude......Your car is SWEET !!!!!!!!!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Looks good to me. Mabey some of the 70 guys will take a look at it. Is the Blue one still for sale? If so, how much?
ACES-70 Nov 9th, 03, 10:42 AM Harry,, The rear mount antenna was AM radio only,, where the antenna was mounted had no bearing whether it was SS car or not, pass rear 1/4 or pass side front fender are both correct,,
mr70 Nov 9th, 03, 11:49 AM XXTXSS
You have a Very nice car collection, and I really like your 70 Chevelle. It is a nice color combo.I am Partial to red/red..Is it for Sale?
Because you asked, not bashing,& just from what I can see in your pix:
*The Master Cylinder is a replacement, and not the Correct design.
*The Radiator Cap should be a Large ear.
*Alternator pulley should be natural metal color.
*Whats the Bracket on the D/S fender well?
*Battery & Tires aftermarket.(I am sure you already know that)
*Plastic Grills should not be in the Cowl area.
*You mention this is a stripe Delete car,but you can't delete something it never had.Working Cowl Ind. Flapper door hoods recieved stripes automatically,so they would be considered stripe delete.
Your Bulge hood did not recieve stripes automatically,it had to be extra ordered,RPO D88,if the owner wanted them from the Factory.
Now all of these are no big deal, and can easily be fixed. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Is it going on Ebay soon? ;)
ACLineman Nov 9th, 03, 12:00 PM Did ANY of the 69 Chevelle's come with the antenna in the windshield?
Because I took a whinshield from I think a cutlass (it's been awhile) and filled in the fender hole. I think it looks sleeker........But then again that's my personal opinion.
Thanks for the comments on my 70 Chevelle. I haven’t heard anything to devastating....yet.
TDW: The Fathom Blue Chevelle was sold to a Chevelle lover in Nashville for 25,500.00. Man did that thing scream with that aluminum head crate motor in it. I traded a guy a 68 Plenum Air Z28 with 9,500 original miles that needed total restoration straight up for the Blue Chevelle. The block had been decked on the Z. Luckily we both felt we got the best end of the deal. However, we all know I got the best end of that deal.
mr70: I booked marked your L78 site a number of years ago and used it as a reference. I would have to say that the L78 is my dream car…harder to find than an LS6 and IMO much more interesting. There seams to be about 20,000 LS6’s on the market...I guess if you put two LS6’s in a garage alone for 9 months you end up with three?
</font> After this picture was taken the master cylinder was replaced with the original that came in a box when I purchased the car.</font> Radiator cap should have large ears? Did not know that</font> Alternator pulley is now natural</font> I do not know what the bracket is on D/S fender well. It was there when I purchased the
car. Did any 70 SS Chevelles come from the
factory with plastic fender wells? This car
has plastic wells. I’m considering changing to
metal, as these are not in perfect condition.
I’ve held off as I’ve been told by a previous
owner that they are original and by others
that they are not. Which is correct?</font> No plastic grills in the cowl area? Really.</font> I should have said that this car was special ordered by Herb Lungren Chevrolet Hays, Ks
with out cowl induction or stripes as all the
Chevelles on the lot had cowl and stripes. The
original owner told me that the dealer ordered
two identical cars. One for the lot and one
for him. Man would I like to find its sister.</font>Thanks for the comments regarding my past rides. However, calling my past rides a collection is somewhat of a stretch. Those are all cars I have owned in the past and loved every one of them. I’m not well healed enough to own that many fine cars at a time. Currently I only have the 69 this thread started with, a 69 numbers Vette that is turning into a money pit and my 70 Chevelle. I’ve had the 70 for almost 10 years and would only sell it to feed my family or to purchase your L78. I’ll trade you straight up and I’ll pay the freight going both ways…what ya say…do we have a deal. ;)
Seriously if you are ever in the market to sell that car I’m your man.
Thanks for all the input
