Hello, been browsing forums for a while. Great site with great knowledge. I am in the market for a 71-72 convertible ss. I saw this on e-bay and was just wondering what something like this is worth?

I started searching recently and haven't been able to find many. This is pretty much what I am looking for. Are these cars worth that much $$$$ in the proper condition? What should something like this go for in a #2 or #3 condition? Just curious, thanks Joe graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I am not sure what the LS5 convertibles were worth for '71-'72, but I don't think that one you linked to is worth its current price...if I'm not mistaken, that's a Malibu grille, not an SS grille...did someone say clone?

Joe, the fifth letter "W" in the VIN proves it is an authentic SS car, since you could only get a 454 with a Super Sport. There were VERY few 454 SS convertibles built in 1972. The way prices are these days it'll probably go higher, but it's only worth what people are willing to spend.

Good Luck in your search.

Joe,

If the car truly is as described, Nick is correct, upper 20's to low 30's is where the market is currently. And as Mike says, the W in the VIN marks it as a 454, which means it has to be an SS.

You mentioned that you've been searching and haven't been able to find many. I looked for 3 1/2 years before I found my 69 convert. There are a fair number of cars out there - including a lot of junk. The truly good ones are hard to find. If this is really what you've been looking for, and the price isn't out of your reach, I'd look into it. Good luck!!

Since you're from NW Chicago area you might want to stop by Volo Auto Museum if you haven't recently and look at the '71 LS5 Convertible that they have currently. Number matching, all black Texas car. Priced at $44,000. I happened to see the car this week while in the area on business. I'd call it a low condition #2 car in my quick look at it. They say it's all # matching and documented. At least might give you a comparison point as you look at others.

Good luck

If you look at NADA classic car guide, it shows Low retail at $17,000 / Average retail at 34,850 / High retail at $50,660.
