Just to humour me and refresh my memory, what does numbers matching really mean? I mean, for example, there is no VIN on my engine block, so we are going to look at the date codes and make a stab at whther the dates which was two weeks in the diff. is matching or not. Could do the smae hting with the alternator for that matter.

JT, There should be a # on your block somewhere... usually on the block behind the drivers side head. True numbers matching refers to not only the vin# matching with the engine, but the trim tag located on the cowl on the drivers side. It contains information such as trim codes and finishes. # matching basically means everything on the car now is as it was when it was new.

Where will I find this on my 255 straight six? I have gone looking. Is RCook out there or someone with a manual that could scan a page pointing at this?

"as it was" Doesn't this leave the door wide open for fraud? Can I find a motor that is matching and call it matching in that case?

Really not the "same" as it was, but with the actual parts that were originally on the car... A replacement part with the correct dates is not a matching numbers part, although with most parts there is no serial number, so no way to verify as long as the dates are correct... The engine and transmission were stamped with the VIN, and there can legitimately never be a "numbers matching" replacement...

If you picked up a brand new Chevelle and blew the engine on the way home from the dealer and had it replaced, it is no longer a matching numbers car.

There are many different opinions. Mine opinion is that the engine is the most important piece, especially because the "Matching Numbers" status is usually easily verified with-out having to climb under the car, etc... Its nice to have all the components that match, but some parts (rearends, manifolds, heads, etc) can be easily swapped from other cars, etc. Since there is alot of leeway between casting and assembly dates, there are alot of replacement pieces around...

Some people contend that the car with a correctly dated engine (etc) is a matching numbers, even if it originally came from another car...

Personally, I don't see the difference between a correctly dated replacement block and a incorrectly dated block... they are both replacements.
