I have a smog pump that I was told came off of a 1966 chevelle . The id# on the back case is 5696132 and the id# on the front of the pump case is 5696211. There is a number that is on a half moon machined piece on side of pump that reads 13962A. My question is this, did 1966 chevelles come with smog systems? and if they did, is this the correct pump for the system? Thanks, Mike

Although I don't know numbers used on the components, Chevy certainly did use smog pumps for California vehicles starting with the '66 models. It wasn't until '68 that other states and Canada began using them.

According to a restoration book that I have:
AIR (pump) was manditory option for all California SS396s in 1966 and 1967. It could be deleted in all other 49 states. Book shows part # 5696104

Those numbers are not correct for a 66 or 67 Chevelle smog. The number 72SS gave are correct for 66 and 67 SS. There is also a date code on the side of the main case of the pump.

It's not to say this pump may not work...just won't be "correct"

Thank you folks for the reply. I didnt realize that gm was putting smog on cars as far back as mine .So they could "delete" the smog system on all but california cars, interesting because the pump was from a guy in california. I will have to get in touch with someone about the part numbers on it. He took it off his 66, but someone could have been put it on the car to pass smog at one time. I will have to look for the date code on the side of the case.Looks like i'm on the hunt. Thanks again for the time, this place rocks !!!!!
