My PPG supplier sold me some DP50LF and catalyst to prime my car. The body has been stripped down to bare metal and existing plastic filler. This was discussed in a previous post, but I wanted to start a new thread for more opinions. I am getting alot of differing feedback regarding primer in general and it appears to be a very technical subject as a whole. Any and all advice is appreciated. Thank you

I believe you can put the dp50lf over bare and fillered metal just not the etch type primers over filler...Should use the etch under the dp50lf for BEST results tho...
It is confusing for us novices...
I'm in the same boat doing my Elky now...

I will say that the dp50lf is a b1@#$ to sand. Maybe go over it with some K38 to be able to block sand it better..I didn't over my 78 that I painted so I speak from experience there...

I dont like epoxy primer over BARE METAL. Ive had problems with epoxy when applied to bare metal, even the GODLIKE  DP epoxy.
Just the way I see it and read it on the tech sheets for DPLF and DP epoxy primer is, for MAX adhesion and corrosion resistance the use of a metal treatment and conversion coating is recommeneded.
Now why would PPG stat right in the tech sheet that another product should be applied first in order to acheive the best finished system when this stuff is supposed to be SO great on BARE METAL?
The PPG Deltron cerifition classes that I took this summer preached the use of etch on bare metal.
Look on the PPG lifetime warrenty for paint, it lists an etching primer for the FIRST primer to be applied for the lifetime warrenty, same with Dupont. Epoxy shows up on the 7 yr warrenty.
As it shows right in the pic etch prime(variprime) is in the LIFETIME warrenty, epoxy (prime-n-seal)is the 7yr

This is the tech sheet for duponts epoxy primer, note how it says for MAX performance apply two coats of variprime first

Taking from the M-S tech manual, note it stats the use of ETCH primer first on bare metal

When I do use epoxy primer I FIRST apply 1 coat to 2 coats of etching primer, then apply 2 coats of epoxy. The etching primer to use for PPG is dx1791 DONT USE dpx170/171 as they cant be applied under epoxy.
Am not saying epoxy is NO GOOD at all, am just saying on bare metal theres something better and I just believe the use of etch followed by epoxy or an urethane primer surfacer is the best route to go.
Rick, you CAN apply an etch primer over filler but you can NOT apply filler over etch.
Filler can ONLY be applied to bare metal and cured and scuffed epoxy primer.

Wow, that's the kind of feedback I was looking for graemlins/thumbsup.gif . I think I understand much better now. I will get some dx1791 etch primer tomorrow and spray this weekend. What should I do about the fender and door panel that I have already applied the DP50LF epoxy primer to  ? Thanks again Sevt & Rick graemlins/waving.gif

Just leave it on. All you need to do is scuff sand before you apply that urethane primer surfacer(K36,K38)

Thanks Sevt,
What should I use to "scuff" the epoxy primer before I apply my acrylic urethane primer/surfacer ? That DP50LF is a non-sanding primer (that's for sure !!)
Thanks again smile.gif
