My '64 396 has a backfire out the exhaust when it gets floored i'm thinking it's the cen. adv any suggestions? thanks to all

It's firing in the exhaust. Which could mean a sticking valve or improper timing. Could be the advance I would check it first. Then I would do a leak down or at least a compression check.Then make sure all your cylinders are firing, if you have headers spay each tube with a spray bottle of water while the engine is running and see if the water flashes the same on all the tubes. Chances are if water stands on one of the tubes you have a dead cylinder. Which could be caused by a bad plug, wire, valve, compression etc.

I don't think it's a stuck valve (engine's been gone through! The Adv is probably messed up thanks
