: 69/70 Standard steering wheel shroud

I know the grain is different on the 69 vs. 70, but my question is in regards to the chrome accents on the shroud... i know the dash trim was chrome, but was the steering wheel shroud chrome too, or silver paint? I have seen some original cars and it looked like the shroud never had chrome on it, sort of a duller silver paint... but on some shrouds with woodgrain, the trim looked like it WAS chrome... I'm just curious if an all black shroud should have "real" chrome trim or if silver paint is correct.

I have several NOS examples at work, the the trim on the horn shrouds was chrome.

Do you have a 69 NOS one you would sell me?

Hi Jason, I'm in the process of restoring an LS6. Would you happen to have a shroud in excellent condition for my "70"? Would you know if they were trimmed in chrome? I know that the suppliers only offer the shroud in the small pebble grain for the 1969 cars. If you have one and would like to sell it let me know. Thanks Brian. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

I work at a Chevy store and purchased an original factory replacement shroud 7-8 years ago. The trim you are asking about was silver finish not chrome. I have never seen chrome on a 69 wheel shroud. The dash was definitly chrome.
A silver paint pen from a hobby shop for model paint works great.

The ones I have on hand are actually for a Camaro RS, meaning they have the rosewood glued to the small pebble finish. THe glue is pretty tough stuff. If you think you can remove it, they are $60. The trim is most definately chrome, not silver like the repo's.

The only one we have for a 70, is used and not the chrome is worn off. I can be reached at the link in my sig. if you guys want to chat.

This is EXACTLY what i stated was by belief in my original post... woodgrain DOES have chrome, black just has silver paint...In your arguing, you guys have basically reassured me that my assumptions must be correct... so i dont want to have chrome on an all-black shroud. and no, you cant take the woodgrain off, it leaves a glue that will never EVER come off, i've tried.

Joey,

Yes, you can take the wood grain off... I did it with mine several years ago. Warm the shroud up slightly with a hair dryer.(And I stress slightly, get it too hot and it will start deforming). Once warm pull the wood grain off. Then use WD-40 and a soft rag to remove the adhesive. Then use Windex or soap and water to remove the WD-40.

I have one here with the woodgrain removed, you could soak it in a 55 gallon drum of WD40 for the next 35 years and you wont get the glue off it. maybe some glue isnt as dried out as others, but i know any i've tried to take the wood off of, it wasnt happening.
