: Special Paint for Instument Panel & Dash??
TKG2000 Jul 9th, 02, 12:16 PM As indicated in the subject, I have a couple of paint questions.
1. Is there a special appropriate paint for restoring the instrument panel gage housing that the gages are mounted in. The color is basically white (although mine is a bit yellowed due to age etc.). {have to paint due to cleaning up a couple rusted spots} I would like to use the right stuff if it is available, so I am looking for the paint to use and the best source for it.
2. I am restoring my entire SS dash. I have the paint for the black part covered, but I need the best possible (most authentic) paint for the 'chrome'/silver trim strips. Any insight/sources??
3. Also, one last piece I just thought of, the dash & instrument cluster use several small gray foam seals. Any recommended source or method for replacing these??
I appreciate any advice or help you may be able to provide. Thanks!
Tim
Randy Mosier Jul 9th, 02, 4:56 PM If this is a 70 - 72 SS dash, then yes, there is special paint for it. And there is also a special bonding agent that has to be applied immediatly prior to painting. Both can be obtained from Year One. (Sorry Ground Up, Year One has the better selection on this particular product.)
Rick_Nelson Jul 9th, 02, 5:35 PM If I recall, it is called Sems Paint and is a dead ringer for the factory color that was applied. Practice on the back as it can be somewhat tricky but it looks beautiful when done. For the chrome trim you are on your own. Do a search on the BB to find out what techniques have been used. Rich Cummins (Rich L-79) I believed offered a service for this but it may have been on smaller pieces.
As far as the foam goes, go to your local hardware or craft stores. There are many varieties available in many thicknesses and widths, with or without adhesive backs and they work great for this.

do the 70-72 housings rust, I thought they were plastic

Randy Mosier Jul 9th, 02, 6:37 PM I didn't. I started my reply with the word "IF".
The 70 - 72 housings are plastic, but they do get faded over time and can be repainted. They require special paint along with the bonding agent. I think the paint is lacquer. Not all of these are black. Mine was dark saddle and I repainted it the same color.

powerfull little word, "if"
I need to slow down http://www.chevelles.com/forum/redface.gif
I hope you didn't think I was trying to be a wise guy Randy, like I said I was just curious and the "rust" part was confusing me
but then I am pretty easily confused
Randy Mosier Jul 9th, 02, 10:03 PM I know you better than that Dean. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
And speaking of slowing down on the speed reading, I see he mentions some rust spots. This must be an earlier car. I missed that little bit of information the first time!
Mike72ss Jul 9th, 02, 10:49 PM Tim, I believe there is no special paint for the metal housing that holds the tach and other gauges. If you remove the gauges from their housing, you should have no problem bead blasting the rust and spraying it with some white enamel like original.

Joey B Jul 10th, 02, 1:10 AM I know a guy who does rechroming of factory plastic dash trim... does fantastic work... e mail me and i'll give you his number... he redid the chrome on the radio delete plate for my 69 Camaro and it looks like an NOS one now...
TKG2000 Jul 10th, 02, 10:24 AM Mike,
Thanks for your response and understanding the specific metal housing piece I was referring to. It understandably eluded some of the others. The 'white' paint seemed that it might be some special whiz bang kind of stuff that only specialty shops/suppliers might have. I appreciate your help.

Thanks for recognizing 'my interest.' It was truly an oversight on my part not to mention my specific car.

J_Fairchild Jul 11th, 02, 9:24 PM I believe GM used a flat white paint for it's instrument panels.Has something to do with a even dash light refection. Also may be you can match foam needed at your local Home Depot and trim to fit. Jim.
