The air cleaner on the 66 Chevelle SS 396 L35 motor(396 c.i./325 h.p.)had a black base with a single air horn and a chrome lid. However, there were 3 of the same base but each have a different number of ports in the bottom for ventilation. There are either 0,1 or 2 ports in the base. I know that the one with 2 ports was used for A.I.R. cars. The one with one port connected a hose to the valve cover and the base with 0 ports obviously connected to nothing and instead the valve cover just had a push in cap. MY QUESTION is how do I determine which origional base is correct for my car. The assembly manual shows illustrations for all provisions I have discussed but gives no specific criteria on which one should be used. Can someone please help? Thank you!

The base with no ports was the standard base unless the car was bound for sale in Calif, wherein it got the base with one port to suck in the fumes from the crankcase. Also, the one port base was available as an RPO option on cars sold everywhere else - though I forget the code for it. The 2 hole base was for A.I.R cars.

Unless your engine code says it was an A.I.R equipped engine - meaning the two hole base, I can't think of any other way to determine which based came on it, short of the build sheet.
