This brings up something I read in a mag recently. The author was claiming that the 70 model was little more than "a transition body style between the highly desirable 69 and the less sought after 71 and 2 models." I assumed the author owned a 69 of course, but with the 70 being the high water mark with the most powerful 450 HP 454 engine offering and a very refined body style that didn't really very much in 71 and 2, and the 68 and 69 body style actually being more of a transition style between the squarish early sixties cars and the more flowing 70-72 style what would make one, other than a 69 owner, think that the 69 model was anymore desirable than a 67 or a 70? I always thought that from a collectors stand point the early cars and the 70 were the most desired models.

being the water mark for styling and horepower.

True, they are all beautiful, some more than others, but the poll didn't ask which was the most beautiful, or the one you like the most...

I assume this is in "stock" form, since aftermarket wheels, tires and lowering will all affect how the car looks...

I think in stock form, the 1970 has the most musclular stance... Those bulging fenders, bulging hood, hood pins, stripes, the headlights sunk into the body-colored (or is that coloured for you Canadians on this board ). Even the tires look more substantial than say the old redline bias-plys.

The 71-72 are close, but the grills/headlight treatment seem (IMO) to give something up... they seem more refined and formal...

For muscluar stance you can't beat a 70-71. I own a 65 by the way. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

i had to go with the 70 overall, but i gotta tell ya, you take a black '68 sitting up on some good rubber and that can be one nasty looking hunk of iron. espcially from a rear elevation angle.

Pretty cool guys, so far the 70 seems to get the most Muscular votes. When I posted the poll, I kind of thought that most might vote for what they have, but I thought about the four Chevelles that I've owned, 65, 66, 68 and my current 69 and I really think I would have always went with the 69. There is just something about the 69 that looks Bad A$$ to me. Always has, probably always will.

Of the GM "A" bodies through the same years
1964 - none
1965 - GTO
1966 - Chevelle (no bias, i liked the looks so I bought one, i didn't buy it and THEN like the looks)
1967 - GTO
1968 - Chevelle SS
1969 - Hurst Olds (no doubt there... look at the scoops)
1970 - Buick GSX

would be hard to choose a favorite between 65 GTO, 69 H/O & 70 GSX though.... probably 69-70-65, or 70-69-65, maybe 65-69-70..... no wait....

The 70 Chevelle, by far. The dual headlamps and the muscular "body bulge" contribute to the great look.

I thank the 70 will have the Most Muscular Stance. I believe that because of the 454 450HP. It has made so much media. My first choice is a 71 convertible. I also like the 67 convertibles. Of coarse BB. I thank most of them have + & - features.

Back to stance. Looks, ride height and wheels.
Looks go to 70 in my book.
Ride height was probably least butt down in 65/66.
Wheels has to go to 15 inch 71-72. 14's deeply set in the wheelwells completely ruin the 69-70 for me in regards to "Muscular Stance". 64-67 = Nice hubcaps!! 68 rallyes aren't bad.

In total I vote for 69 because it is the best balance of the three.

I'd say the '72. The taillights on the '71-'72's add more of a muscular look from the rear, I saw one today. The '72 front with the blacked out headlight bezels look pretty aggressive too.

1972 - NOT "71 or 72, they're the same". You wouldn't tell a '68 guy that it's the same as a '69. I like the one-piece turn signals and the headlight bezels touching the grill. '69 is a close second for me, though.

Obviously we are all educated about chevelles and know the little subtle differences between years. Some not so subtle. However, I think once 68 hit a lot of the muscle cars looked the same. Kind of kills it for uniqueness.

I think 69's look the most muscular. Of course, I like them all, 66/67 as well, but 69 as the most muscular. 1970's look to "porky" for me, the 69s look lean and mean, even though they are basically the same. My pops says he likes 70 the best. In my slow & steady search for a either plain jane or shell (no motor/trans) car, its a 69 or 70.

caru68

I'm a little biased, like everyone else is. I'd say the 68. The twin hood domes, Vette Rally Wheels, and the blacked-out rocker and tail-light panels give it my thumbs-up. The 69 would have been my first choice, had I been able to find one in my price range, but there are so many similarities between the two, I just gotta go with my car! They are all cool to me.

1970 is the muscular looking year, standing proud, then the United States goverment stepped in and had to stop the insanity of everyone buying the 1970 models, they knew 1 more year looking like the 1970's model would mean total destruction of the human race, 1969 is close but no CIGAR, mike

as for the poll

70's always top the charts

but that is because most people have no clue what a cool car should look like:p

68 and 69 are the coolest then 67 then 65 then 70

and as for the 71 and 72 well they fall in that granny car catagory that the 70 is in:D

Yep, the 68's and 69's are the definate granny car. A quick glance will tell you that. AND that cheesy front end will verify it.....something grandma would put on the car.....tinware galore! That's why Chevy HAD to come out with a REAL muscular looking car...a car which to this day appears on MORE restoration catalogs than ANY other year Chevelle, AND appealed to the youth market of the day....not my PARENT'S generation like the '68 or '69. ;) Heck I knew guys who bought the '68 and traded it when the '70's came out. They were finally able to cruise the streets again without people pointed and laughing! :p The '68's and the 69's LOOK old and SHOULD be considered an antique. :) The '70 still has great lines that are considered classic 35 years later. Sorry guys, the '70 still has the most muscular stance....guess that's why they sold more that year than in any other year. :D

One IMPORTANT fact to remember is that these cars were advertised as mid sized FAMILY cars. NOT performance cars as such. It really wasn't until 1970 when Chevy went all out and pushed the performance angle. There were more, what you youngsters call "granny cars" sold than any other 396 or 454 optioned vehicle. The big blocks weren't practical on the street for everyday use. I remember them as being a tuners nightmare. Try, just try, putting 500 miles or more a week, week after week, on a big block WITHOUT having to do something on it. So, I guess I don't quite understand the term "granny car". "Sleeper", maybe, granny car, no. Let me see how many big blocks went 335,000 miles without a rebuild. ;)

so it would be 108 for 69 and 112 for 70 pretty close.

Jerry, you're very confused.
I mean, c'mon, let's go back to where the performance started. The SS396 in 1965. Then all the way thru the 60's. It's just a shame that when the engine performance peaked, it was wasted on the 70. A 69 LS6 would have been a much bigger hit.
1970 is the Grandmas car for sure.
It's square and boxy. Big wheel wells and small wimpy tires.
An ugly flat rear bumper with no character at all.
And the hood. OMG, the hood extends all the way to the grille. Can you say, ((((((((drop anchor))))))))))). What a boat !
The 70 looks something more like a Monte Carlo with it's looooooooong hood. YUK.
I mean, just take one look at the dash of a 70 with it's long sweeping grandma speedo dash and it makes me think, Ford Galaxie. Or Impala. YUK.
Now the 69 on the other hand, well now that's a performance minded car. It appeals to two age groups. Under 30. And over ! It has the much sportier round guages. And a much tidier dash configuration. The 69 didn't need that big padded dash that you have in your 70. It's all business baby, none of that big padded dash frilly stuff. Nope. Lightweight. Performance. Serious business, not padded comforts.
And hey, at least the 69 doesn't share it's front bumper with a Monte Carlo like your 70 grandma car does. uuuggghhhh.

1969 is the best Chevelle made.
You can have your LS6.
A 69 L89 375hp 396 or a COPO 427 would outrun that boat.

For the record, all Chevelles are cool in my book.
1970 Super Sports DO NOT have long sweeping grandma speedo dash.
A Monte Carlo bumper is NOT the same as a 70 Chevelle bumper either
And a Monte hood is quite a bit longer than a Chevelle, probably about 16" or so.
A stock L78 is NOT going to outrun a stock LS6 either, and thats a fact.
No offense either Nate :)
All my statements are facts, not opinion other than I think all Chevelles are cool.

psssst, Mr 4 speed, I'm just trying to get under Jerry's skin. he he he
I know all about what you are saying.
He likes to rib us 69 guys, but we can dish it right back about his 70.

1. Jerry 70 is not an SS. It's a long grandma speedo Malibu !
2. 70-72 Monte front bumpers share the same shape as the 70-72 Chevelles. It's the turn signals that are different.
3. I'll have to do some measuring now, but I know the difference in the length of the 70-72 Monte and 70-72 Chevelle hoods is not 16". They're closer than that. My point was that the 70-72 Chevelles do not have a header panel in front. Thus the long hoods. Can you say "boat".
4. Your statement about and LS6 car outrunning an L78 is speculative. It really depends on the driver ! Yeah I know the LS6 is faster. I'm trying to get Jerrys goat cuz he drives a grandmas 70 Malibu.

And for the record, I thought Chevelles were cool BEFORE you did, so there.

You old guys sound like a buck of little 6th graders or something arguing about whos car looks better.Give me a break. All Chevelle years have something others dont. But the only thing that really makes me angry is when people with a 70 - 72 Chevelle talk about how ugly the 71 is compared to the 72 or vice versa. They are practically the same dang car with a few minor changes. And who cares about what the stock chevelles look like. There are so many things you can do with Chevelles to get rid of some of the less desirable things on them such as a custom dash. I infact have a genious plan for my 72 that will blow all your cocky 70s and 69s out of the water!

But what really makes me mad now is we have a 72 guy who wants to mix it up too. JK of course.
But this is fun.
I do like the 71 front turn signal lenses better than 72.
I like the grille better too.
But I'll be the first to admit that most people don't even know these subtle differences between the 71 and 72's.
They just see the shape of the car.

I had a 70 Malibu about 10 years ago. It was a bucket seat/console car with AC, but I could see that it just wasn't near the car that the 69's are, so I got rid of it as soon as I could, Jerry.

If we can get Jerry's blood pressure up high enough, maybe he'll keel over and then somebody can get the neglected 70 Chevelle and clone it into the SS454 that it has always yearned to be ! That poor Malibu, born into a life of poverty and held down by it's owner, never to see what speed really is. Oh, the humanity.

I know that car just wants to get out and breeeeeaaaaaaath.

In all sincereness Jerry, I hope you drive that car another 20 years. Too many of these cars are kept under lock and key and we just don't see enough of them on the road anymore.

Not mad, look thru the screen names of those that voted for the different years. I understand that some people have a 70 when their favorite is really a 69 or vice versa. Things just don't add up though, way to many names with 70 in them under the 69 list. Same is true for the other lists so don't trust them, as you yourself said the numbers don't even add up right so who knows what the real results are.

That's exactly why I won't go to Florida. I'm terrified of those people hanging Chads!

You have no idea what it's been like being a Chad since the Presidential Election of 2000. I should apply for federal aid or something.

I truly love the 70 model and I really like the 71 and 72 models (I own a few). However, a 1967 Chevelle that is done right (slightly lowered, pro-touring, etc.) is the best IMHO.

I'm just a regular guy with a wife and kids. I'm fond of Chevelles, El Caminos, fishing, and shooting. I hope they never have a reason to hang me.

Chad

PS, why aren't the '68 and '69 combined? The '70 isn't the only one that shares a "stance" with other years.

Not to swat a hornet's nest here, but even though we, or at least the pollster here, favor the "classic" chevelles (don't understand the exclusion of the 71/72s), many clubs include ALL chevelles/malibus and I wonder how the 73 & up vehicles would've faired.

In all fairness to the hobby and to the cars,it is all in the eyes of the beholder. Some just beholding the wrong car...Everyone knows '70 is the most 'muscular' looking!:D

Stance wise, you can make any Chevelle look mean with the proper aftermarket goodies.

IMO, stock, stance wise, they all looked pretty weak...

BUT THEY ARE ALL GOOD LOOKIN'!

Stance and Looks are being mismatched here into a long, drawn out blah of a thread.

Can this thread go away now?

I'd say the 64 is the most "dangerous" looking only because they are 42 this year and are most likely to come apart at high speed flying down the highway, losing parts and killing pedestrians.

Gotta be a 70- SPESHLY a 70 boo. sta. wgn. Full hubcaps, roof rack, whitewalls, This will have the look of a real "MUZZEL" car. What Chevelle is the best looking? What if you owned a two door EDSEL with a 427- 4-speed
After an EDSEL any Chevelle would look good. Be happy with what you have.

i have a 70 elco...but i have to give a 69 chevelle the nod for meanest looking stance...theres somthing frighteningly shark like about them (especially the back half) when sitting right with the right tires and rims (old school cragar s/s's will be just fine, thank you )...and i personally think they're maybe the one and only car in the world whos looks are actually improved by a vinyl top, a black on black 69 SS chevelle is plenty sinister looking in my book

hrd
Sep 5th, 06, 1:08 AM
sorry, but i agree with the 70 cut off point, i'm not sure why, but, i just think they really lost something when they lost two headlights up front....like a biker trying to look mean while holding a cell phone to his ear....lol, no, not nearly that bad

I think the 70 has the most muscular look due to the styling. The image is definitely the most performance oriented.

Damn this thread has been going on forever.

Might as well chime in.

It's a toss up between a '67 drooool and a '70 for most muscular stance.

But I am a '65 guy myself. I like the hard lines and boxier look. better to go cruising with. Knowing me, if I had a '67... I would HAVE to go haulingass everywhere I went.

Buying a '65 I can take it slow and cruise around. if I bought a '67 I would need a helmet and if I had a big old '70 I wouldhave to grow my hair long and get a mustache and keep my cigs rolled up in my sleave
