I want to convert my 72 Chevelle SS from it's current idiot lights to the factory tach a gauges. I would like to know what is involved and all the parts I will need for the conversion, such as circut board, wiring, etc. My 72 does have a complete MSD ignition, 6AL box, Pro billet distributor, Blaster 2 coil and 8.5 Super conductor wires, will there be any problems using the factory tach with an after market ignition? My 72 is a factory small block car (still has a 350) with no A/C, since my Chevelle did not come from the factory with a tach and gauges will I need a new engine wiring harness? also will any modifications need to be done with the fuel gauge since I have a big gas gauge where the tach would go and with the factory instermentation the gas guage would be smaller would the wiring from the big gauge hook up to the small gauge? Basically what is everthing I will need to convert my idiot lights to factory instermentation, what wiring, etc? And where is the best place to buy all the needed componets from (gauges and wiring). Thanks for any help or suggestions.

there is a set of step by step instructions in the archives. search for gauge conversion. i have performed the change on 2 cars. you really dont need a new wiring harness. you can just move the wires in the circuit bd connector. the instructions tell you how. you will have to run a tach wire and the 2 Amp gauge wires. im pretty sure the tach will work i have a 6AL box in my chevelle running a aftermarket tach. havent put that cluster in as yet. they make all the gauges in repo now and you will need a new circuit board. if you cant find it email me and i can fax you a copy.
good luck, dick

Thanks for the response Dick. Who did you buy your Gauges from? were they good quality, do they operate corectly and accurately? Is there any changes that need to be done with the gas gauge or will the old lines hook right up to the new gauge?

i found a real 1970 gauge set up a couple of years ago. you can find people selling complete clusters on ebay. original parts group OPG has them. they arent cheap. tach $189, other gauges $119. gas sending unit is the same. you have to change the temp sender. they are at any parts store. changing the wires in the connector is easy once you figure out how to get the clips out. i use a small sdriver and slide it in to release the barb. good luck, dick

I bought the SS guage conversion kit from Muscle Factory for my 72. It came with just about everything I needed and fairly good directions. I would recommend it.
It cost me around $360 and came with all the wiring, guages, sending unit, ect. I tried pricing it all seperatly and couldnt come close on the price.
