Does anyone have a Baltimore built '69 SS or know of any with firewall or other inspection markings? Would love to know as most talked about are ones built in Kansas City.

Krum,

I have a 69' SS396 Baltimore built car. However I have done a complete body off frame restoration. The car spent all of it's life here in NE Ohio so you probably have a good idea what I started with. I have remarked many inspection marks. However I did not document any from my SS specifically during the resto.

I got info and pictures from many cars shows and also had a inspection marking guide from Mark Meakins (NCOA President) years ago. This was provided to him from a professional restoration company many years ago.

As far as markings on the firewall I do not have any as of yet. These were normally done with a grease pencil,(white). Normally consisting of the model number or last 4 digits of the model number. Also the trany code ie, M20 or M21 ect. These markings were hand written not stamped so the variations were endless... Printed, script, large, small. The ones I have seen seemed to be more toward the upper right side of the firewall near the heater box and or toward the center or off center.

I believe I still have a copy of the guide but would have to dig it up. And the different color paints were available at my local hardware store or hobby shop. I have been reluctant to mention this guide in the past as I felt I would be overwelmed with requests for copies of it.

You may be able to see some of these markings in my pics if you look hard enough. However I may have posted these pics before completing the markings?

Follow up...

Before I get any requests for copies of this inspection marking manual... I did dig it out and it is copyrighted.

I recall trying to contact the company and individual years ago and was told that they are out of buisness.

Does anyone know the legalities of a copyright when the copyright company is out of buisness?

Second, lets see if anyone knows anything about this company...

The name of the company is/was...

SUPER CHEVYS LIMITED

Manuals written by: FRANK SERAFINE

"Under Carriage Detailing & Componenent Finishes" and "Under Hood & Under Carriage Inspection/I.D. Markings" (Copyright 1992, Super Chevys Limited).

I think Frank Serafine was the owner/president of Super Chevys Limited?

These manuals were sold in a kit that contained Inspection/I.D. Crayons, Original Formulated Paint Colors, Brushes and the Instruction Manuals.

They were put together for 70-72 Chevelles and Monte Carlos but I'm sure were fine for earlier models as well as Camaros.

Also in reading thru these manuals briefely he mentions that not all cars had writing on the firewall. This was not something that was mandated by Chevrolet. Some writing was also done in yellow not just white and some writing was actually under the firewall paint. He also goes on to say that other option codes marks have been found from time to time written on the firewall.

Other inspection markings such as brake booster, steering box, distributer, temp sender and alternator I decided upon after looking over many No #1 cars at shows over a number of years.

There are about 7 different colors required for all the marking from front steering and suspension to drive shaft/ "U" joints and rear axle.

The brushes used were a foam type in different widths.

The other manual (brief) details the correct finish for each chassis component, 3rd Member, Brakes, Fuel, Engine Compartment, Suspension (rear), Suspension (front), and Driveshaft. Color and gloss. Very detailed down to bolts and clips. Such as Gloss, Semi Gloss, Semi Flat, Natural Cast Grey, Natural, Phosphate, Zinc and Galvanized.
Also covers formulas for the different glosses of black and grey.

Let me know what you can find out!

When I stripped the firewall on my 07C '69 Baltimore car, I found white markings on the bare metal under the first coat of paint. The only markings were a squiggle that looked like a sloppy zero, and a "B" over a "72". Both of which matched the trim tag paint code of 72 B, Monaco Orange with black vinyl top.

On my 10A Baltimore SS 396, I found two number 14, a large 14 above the blower housing that extended under the sealant that is sprayed where the top of the housing meets the firewall, and a small 14 above and behind the brake booster. The numbers were (I think) orange. They were faded, so might have been yellow or red or God knows. I think they were intended to indicate the paint code (14 14) for Cortez Silver top and bottom.

Hi again, I screwed up, I'm talking about a 70 model, not a 69 like you asked about. Sorry.

I think that if a company is sold that the copy right goes with the new one. If it just goes out ofbusiness that the copy right is void. There is also time limits on these. It would be very nice to see this material.
