I know it was a closed element, but i have seen some that are totally black, and some with a chrome lid... could they come either way? Was the chrome lid part of an engine dress up package? Maybe a midyear change? Just curious mainly, I have what looks like a 100% original assembly and the lid was never chromed.

I believe my 68 is the same or very similar. The lid is chrome as are what I think all 68-69 325 horse Chevelle SS's are.
Other Chevrolets such as the full size cars may have had the same air filter with a black lid.
You may be able to see my lid in one of the pix in my sig.

May be a full size lid, all of the Chevelles we have seen have had the chrome lid, earliest car we had in was a Feb, latest was a July

For what it's worth, I have still have the air cleaner that came on my car when I got it
(who knows how many of what kind were on it before me)
It is a closed one snorkel with chrome top and 396 325 HP decal
My 69 was built in Kansas City in Feb and has the "JE" engine with the correct VIN

FYI, the black top was used on 335hp 427s and 265hp 396s (yuck) in full size cars. The chrome were used on 390hp and 425hp cars.

I must have a rare 427 air cleaner then, and it must be worth more money than a chrome plated low- horse 396 one! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif j/k

Black base, chrome top on mine. However, someone cut off the snorkle (ugh) common back in the day. Since I have a later model carb on it now, (electric choke) I use the old stand by, 375HP cleaner. I still have the original and will some day put a snorkle back on it and have the lid rechromed.

Does someone know about chrome plating?
Would it be easier to chrome a non-chrome lid. I mean get one that is painted and the correct style and have it chromed.
Isn't it more work to strip the old chrome off ?
