I was able to pick up an original 70 BBC starter # 1198430. It has the cast iron nose piece. I understand it is for an automatic transmission application. Can it be used for a manual transmission and what are the best options, if it will work with a 4 speed, for restoration?

Rick,
The date reads reads as 0E22. I'm guessing May 22,70.

Hi The cast iron nose is for a stanard transmission with a stock bellhousing, it has a smaller nose on it for clearance from the bellhousing. It may work with a automatic transmission as well but I'm not sure.I use the cast iron nose starter with my 4 spd. The iron nose piece is interchangable with automatic transmission starters. You just change the nose depending on what transmission you are using. Dave

Thanks for the feedback. If this starter will work for a manual transmission, what options would you suggest for restoration?

Ed I'm not sure what you mean by "options for restoration" If you have a 4spd. car with a stock bellhousing and you want to use a stock starter, you will have to use the starter with the smaller iron nose. Dave
