My good friend John just aquired a mint 1970 396 SS 4 speed, matching numbers car. It currently .60 over, has manifolds, stock intake manifold and q-jet carb but also has a radical cam. He often smells gas, like unburned fuel. He told me he now wants to put headers on it. Will better aspiration help rid this car of this fuel smell or should he be looking at that cam?
He hasn't joined TC yet but he will be monitoring this topic directly. Lets show him what we can do!
Thanks
Tracey

Sounds more like jetting in the Q Jet to me. What do the plugs look like? They should be a tan colour if the carb is jetted correctly. If the primarys are jetted too rich, you will get that raw fuel smell. Also make sure the primary rods are matched to the jet size. Have a look at the plugs...they will tell you what's going on.

Where and when does he smell fuel? When he walks into the garage? Sitting in the car while it's running? Standing outside when it's running? I'd make a thorough check for fuel leaks.
