: Where do you put your guages?
shannont Feb 1st, 02, 3:02 PM I'm just curious where some of you guys put your guages in your 66' and 67' dashes. I have some cool ideas, but thats all they are is ideas. I haven't ever seen any guage pillars for anything less than a 68'.
A friend of mine, who is an interior designer, said he could mold me a full pillar mount. Or he could mold me a few pods into my dash above my glove box. Yes I know I wondered the same thing how would I see them. He said he could angle them toward me. If you guys have any pictures or ideas let me know. I'm interested in something a little more trick than putting a mount under the dash.
Steve R Feb 1st, 02, 11:36 PM Unless you are willing to fab up your own dash the normal locations will have to do. The only other option is where the radio or heater controls are. On mine, I put the oil, volt, water temp under the dash, the tach in front of the clock (upside down), and the shift light on the A pillar.

DaleM Feb 2nd, 02, 8:24 AM I had my dash completely redesigned but it was relatively easy to do. I simply had a lightweight panel welded into the "V" area of the dash (in my case) mounted a set of Dakota Digital Universal gauges. You could just as easily mount individual round gauges, speedo and tach. It also allowed me to update the stereo with a universal type square mount.
Be aware that 66 and 67 dashes are different. The breakaway column mandated in 67 forced some minor changes in the column area and either the headlamp or wiper switch.
I have some pics of the dash in-progess and finished at one of my web sites (http://www.dalesplace.com/htm/chevelle/chevelle.htm). Click on The Interior link.
The only downside to doing the dash this way was having to remove the glove box lock. Since I have two large compartments in the center console, losing access to the glove box was no problem and it gave me an extra storage compartment to local the control boxes for the digital gauges and the fuel injection computer.

Try the new OPG reproduction gauge kit for 66 and 67 chevelles. It cost $199 plus the two sending units. It looks like the original gauges and will give you gas, temp, battery, and oil pressure. It is a great looking package and was not too hard to install.

Do you have a picture of this guage bezel? I loved your idea so I called OPG and they said they didn't make one for a 66'and 67'. If you have a picture or some sort of link to where I could get my hands on one I would be greatful.

shannon, if you do come up with an idea for the gauges to go on the right side above the glovebox please let me know,i have had that thought for a while,if you can angle them and enclose them it would look sharp. if i come up with anything i will let you know. mine is a "67".JIMK
1966_L78 Feb 6th, 02, 4:03 PM I used to have a project car that we put the guages right above the speedometer. We used a hole saw to cut holes (where the plastic "ignition strip" goes. Since the guages (2 5/8 in Autometers) were too big, we used some exhaust tubing the make the bottom of the pods "bulge" into the area directly above the speedo... It took some work, but shouldn't be any harder than molding them in by the glovebox... Just have to make sure they don't block the view of the speedo and that they are out of the way of the steering wheel. I guess you could try to modify the ingnition strip, but we tossed it since it was custom anyway. We also moved the factory glove box to the center of the dash, eliminating the heater controls and stock radio, but put a stereo in the new glovebox, plus other switches (easier to reach).
67jeff Feb 6th, 02, 8:03 PM I am going to have a company out here in California make a new cluster "ring" for mine. (The chrome ring that goes around the cluster.) This will be all billet aluminum with cutouts for my full set of autometer gauges and lights for my blinkers, high beams and brakes. In the strip above the gauge cluster I am having custom work done to house my shift light, temp warning light and oil pressure warning lights along with the original controls...at least the ones I am keeping. Then in the area where the heater controls are (Not sure if I am using a heater...if I do then this idea will relocate to the ashtray.) In that space will be my memory tack reset switch, my adjustable rev limiter switch and my timing advance switch. I may also have to find a place for nitrous switches but I haven't sold myself on nitrous yet. I also have to find a place for my brake bias adjuster but that will probably go on the floor.

Shannont:
The gauges I am talking about are installed inside the dash cluster. You have to remove the dash cluster. Then remove the fuel gauge and clock and replace them with the gauge conversion kit from OPG. The gauge conversion kit is part #C210223 and cost $199. I also replaced the speedometer lens so as not to have a hole where the clock stem sticks out. It was not very hard to do the conversion and you get a factory looking gauge package. You do not have to have any gauge pods sticking out under the dash. There was an article in one of the magazines that shows the installation but I can not seem to find the issue.
