: Starter Gear Wont Engage With The Flywheel

well, i know my starter is getting power because i was looking under the car when my dad cranked it over and i could see the starter motor was spinning, but it was not engaged with the flywheel, instead it was about 1 cm back. the starter is on tight, so that is not the problem.

i think it is more of an electrical problem. because i think that the starter needs more power so that it would then hit the flywheel.

thanks, hopefully ill be able to drive it to school tomorow

the battery has 12 volts. and i dont think the bendix is stuck because the starter motor is spinning.

i think the starter might be dead

im almost positive that teh starter is dead now. gonna go with a summitt pro torque starter. part # SUM-820323 . would a 396 block have an inline bolt pattern that would fit this starter?

im asking now cause its about 10 degrees right now, and i dont feel like yanking it off.

anyways, the summit website says that it will fit a 396, so i think i should be fine

Bo,
Any of the gear reduction starters for big block chev will be fine. Get the one with the multiple bolt patterns on the mount and rotate it so the starter solonoid is pointed down. That will get the solonoid into the breeze and away from the headers...and avoid heat soak. I'm not sure of the part number but if it's for a big block it will work great...and with only two wires.

is there a way that i could test the starter outside of the car, just like hook up a battery and then jump it with a screwdriver??

Yes
Put it on the ground. Hook up the negative battery cable to the frame. Hook up the positive cable to the large terminal. Put nuts on the large terminal and the S terminal. Use some nuts. The arc will damage the threads. Hold it down and touch the large terminal to the S terminal with a screwdriver.
*EDIT*
Use jumper cables. I figure you know that but just wanted to mention it anyway.

If it spins but doesn't pop out into the flywheel it sounds like you soleniod is shot.
Slip a new one on and I'll bet it works
