: Fuel tank vent question
gotago Jan 29th, 02, 5:54 AM The fuel tank on my 69 has 2 vent lines on the upper right of the tank that run to what looks like a vent filter high up on the body. When I fill the tank, sometimes fuel comes from the vent filter. The gas cap appears to be a non vented type. Should the cap be vented to prevent pressure from forcing fuel through the vent filter?

Don_Lightfoot Jan 29th, 02, 7:20 AM Well Mark, that vent assembly is actually called "Fuel Tank Vent Surge" according to the assembly manual. The car should have a "non vented" gas cap. There should not be gas coming from that vent assembly, sounds like yours could be faulty. I'm not aware of anyone reproducing it at this point, you may have to try and find a used one.
Good luck.

SS_Dave Jan 29th, 02, 7:27 AM Mark,
You are the first guy on this site, I think
that has the correct vent and gas cap.
I believe there is a check valve in the vent to keep gas from getting out. Mine was all goofed up and I threw it away early in the restoration. I have a gas filter on mine now mounted as high in the rear end tunnel as I can get it. I don't have any problems with gas leaking out. If you don't mount it high, when you fill the tank, the gas will warm up, expand and flow out the breather. Without the check valve it will start to siphon until the gas in the tank is below the breather tube in the inside.

Butch Johnson Jan 29th, 02, 9:54 AM You are correct that there is supposed to be a check valve on this vent tube. Mine was just a plastic blob when i removed it. I searched high and low for a replacement with no luck. Ended up using one off of a donor car that didn't need it anymore. It is a must and you should stick with the non-vented gas cap. Start searching for salvage yard 69s!!
cperrell Jan 29th, 02, 11:22 AM Does anyone make an "aftermarket" (non-stock type) of check valve?
I had problems with mine recently. came out and gas was pouring out from under my car. The vent in my '65 is only a straight tube (looks like a "silly straw") with NO check valve. My tank was not completely full, but the tempreture had risen quickly.
I would like to find a check valve for it. I don't care if it is a "stock" valve, I just want it to be effective.
Any ideas?

gotago Jan 29th, 02, 3:18 PM Thanks fellas, for a minute there I thought I was in trouble. All I have to do is go to some yards around here and find a 33 year old part, no problem http://www.chevelles.com/forum/rolleyes.gif Do the pontiac or other A bodies have this? Around here Chevelles are hard to find.

Bubba396 Jan 30th, 02, 4:16 AM Try a plumbing supply house. They have all types of backflow and check valves. I would think they would have something that could be adapted to the vent on a gas tank. Just a thought.

Have you ever noticed that those instruments designed to detect intelligent life in the universe are all pointed AWAY from Earth???
BobFmTyler Jan 30th, 02, 5:33 AM Don is right about the vent surge and the non-vented cap. The vent surge is nothing more than a plastic housing stuffed with foam rubber. It gives enough resistance to allow the fuel system to pressurize but not over pressurize.
Some prior years had a looped hose that went into the trunk area, this one stays outside.
I took the foam rubber out of mine and cleaned it. I stuffed it back into the housing and put it back on, no problem.
If you have removed it or done any work in the area, you migh check to make sure you have the clamps tight. You don't want a leak in that area, you tail pipe is right below it.

gotago Jan 30th, 02, 6:10 AM Again thanks for the advice. I'll replace the hoses and clamps just to be sure. I'll also check that there is actually something in the plastic fitting

Greg Eacker Jan 30th, 02, 5:42 PM Mark, Run down Skibo Rd past Home Depot towards 401, just past the school on the right hand side. They have a pile of old Chevelles there, might be able to solve your problem.
gotago Jan 30th, 02, 6:53 PM Greg, thanks, I forgot about that guy. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/eek.gif I have been in there a couple of times.

gotago Feb 4th, 02, 7:56 PM Just posting the results. I took off the lines and replaced the lines and clamps with new ones. I bought a foam rubber filter for a lawn mower and cut some pieces to fit and stuffed them in the plastic fitting. So far, so good. Greg, FYI, the guy by home depot doesn't do any work for the general public and gets his stuff from Austley's in Graham.

Woj Sep 24th, 08, 11:26 PM Go to the auto parts store and get some regular neoprene hose. I believe you need a 1/2" and a 3/8" hose. About 1 foot each will do it. See if you can get the spring clamps at the same time.
Good luck.
Woj.
