: Vin metal plate on firewall
jack Jan 28th, 02, 5:07 PM Guys,
I was reading about the ebay post on the Vin tag for sale. Big legal/touchy issue....
My tag is off my vehicle, It is original as I'm the second owner, and know of it's history. It's a 65 Chevelle SS.
Th rivets popped through do to my ignorence in the sand blasting field while doing the engine compartment.
Now how do I get this somewhat thrashed original Vin plate reconditioned/replaced??
Or do I just have it replated?? It's such a thin piece of material.
Want to be legal all the way around.
Thanks,
jack
Dean Jan 28th, 02, 6:12 PM If the tag is off, it's too late to be legal now (at least it would be in Kansas anyway)
maybe you can epoxy it back on
You could have one of those places make a new one and use the correct rivits to put it on
then don't tell nobody
Steve A Jan 28th, 02, 6:59 PM I'm assuming that it is the "cowl tag", and not the actual VIN plate. I believe that the VIN plate is in the door jamb on a '65 ? If it's just the cowl tage, also known as a trim tag, you can get a reproduction with no legal issues, because they don't contain the VIN on these tags.
I'm not real familiar with '65's so someone correct me if I'm wrong.
jack Jan 28th, 02, 8:41 PM Steve,
It's what was on the firewall.
So maybe it's called the cowl tag..Hopefully!
About 4" long.
I can't believe I'm the first one to need a replacement. Must be something set up that's legit to replace these??? I'll keep looking.
Dean,
The epoxy would be one way to go but I dont want to loose it in case it drys out etc..
Thanks for the input guys.

66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Jan 28th, 02, 10:30 PM Jack, there's nothing illegal about replacing a TRIM TAG...now a VIN TAG, that's another story ( but that's done too ). Although Dean would know more about Kansas laws than I...I just can't see any legal link to a TRIM TAG, would like to know though?
Sounds like your situation is easily remedied...go here http://www.trimtags.com/
and you can get a new one made or just the CORRECT rivets, whatever you need.
Good luck!

DaleM Jan 28th, 02, 10:55 PM Maybe it's the licensing they have to pay to GM/Ford/MoPar, but doesn't $195 for little piece of stamped metal seem kind of high?

Dean Jan 29th, 02, 5:54 AM I need to read better before I post http://www.chevelles.com/forum/redface.gif
He said "while doing the engine compartment"
and the topic title said "on the firewall" and I still had VIN tag, not TRIM tag in my mind
I wouldn't worry at all about a missing trim tag
sorry http://www.chevelles.com/forum/redface.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/redface.gif http://www.chevelles.com/forum/redface.gif
jack Jan 29th, 02, 11:54 AM Thanks guys,
It is the trim tag. I didn't know the name of the part but after viewing the link, that's it. Thanks for the link.
Big bucks!I'm in the wrong business.
I really don't need it..
Sorry if I mislead anyone on the part name.
Thanks again for the input guys,
jack
