: Stalling when coming to a stop, distributor problem?

Last night I took my Caprice out and it stalled at a stop sign (engine was warmed up already)and again when I stopped in the street to back in the driveway at home. It never did this before, and runs fine otherwise. I'm not sure what's been replaced already and what hasn't yet by the last owner. I was guessing the distributor might've caused the stall, it could probably use a new cap and rotor but I'm not sure. The whole thing (HEI also)needed an overhaul on the El Camino a while back. I'm running synthetic oil in it too which I was told could effect the oil pressure but it's been fine before, I've driven it for hours and had no problems. I'd just like to know what I might want to replace or check before I get stuck somewhere, again I don't really know the car yet. Thanks

EDIT: I had the tranny serviced already too, new fluid and filter.

Sounds to me like the carb is flooding out when you stop or change directions.

That might be. Hopefully it's something simple like that, I'm still getting to know the car but so far so good. It's the most comfortable car I've ever been in though, I can drive for hours and not have my back start to hurt or anything plus it's got the power to match, that 4bbl 305 has got some pep when you lay into the secondaries passing, wow! It really wakes up.

That car have an Idle Stop Solenoid? If the solenoid isn't working it can stall as you stop. Just a passing thought.

Not sure, it probably does though, I'll check.

I had an ignition module go bad in the Chevelle. The car would die when slowing to a stop. The stalling coincided with the downshift as I slowed.

Ignition modules do weird things when they go bad.

A bad torque converter lock up switch on the trans can cause this. The torque converter doesn't unlock when coming to a stop and the engine is drug down to 0 rpm. Like a manual trans car if you don't push in the clutch when stopping.

I am guessing floats to low. All the fuel is running front of carb uncovering jets.

When you restart the car do you have to push the pedal to the floor and let it turn over a few times (Carb flooding) or don't touch the pedal (or pump it) and it starts right up. If it's the later then the floats probably too low.

My 87 firebird would stall when it was put in gear.. Figured for sure it was a carb problem, but as usual it wasnt (always blame the carb but usually nothing wrong with it!lol) Turned out to be the distributor pickup. Would never have thought.

I could just restart it, didn't have to touch the pedal and it'd fire right up. Another problem I've had is when I reach around 40mph it goes into overdrive and the engine gets bogged down, I have to put it in 3rd to stay at that speed or there's a big loss of power. Might be the same thing that made it stall out. Thanks for the help
