: Overflow Recovery Tanks
BlueSS454 Jan 1st, 03, 6:16 PM I was just wondering what some guys are doing about adding a coolant overflow tank. I would like to add one to A) get rid of the hose that's hanging down by the radiator support, and B) to keep the coolant in the system when it decides to puke on thos infamous hot and humid New Jersey summer days. I was looking for somwthing simple like a quart aluminum or stainless steel cylinder.

YenkoChevelle69 Jan 1st, 03, 6:57 PM My Chevelle has a plastic container on the drivers side of the rad support with a tube running across the top of the radiator cover to the puke jug. There is then a small hose coming off the cap of the jug incase that gets full. Mine did last summer when my radiator cracked and the car overheated. My buddies 69 SS has the chrome tube in the same spot with a metal line running to it. And my other buddies 71 charger has a red jug that is the shape of a pill that has a big jegs sticker on the side. Simple always works best, remember this.

I use a plastic tank from a 84 Camaro mounted on the drivers front fender liner. It was inexpensive and works fine. Here is a pic: http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/JimN/engine3.JPG

MalibuJerry350 Jan 1st, 03, 7:26 PM I have one from a mid 80's Camaro mounted right behind the battery. Looks like it belongs there! The plastic tank had three mounting tabs, one of which I cut off, and used self tapping bolts to mount it to the inner fender.

72sselcamino Jan 1st, 03, 8:10 PM A while back there was a discussion in the membser's area for such a set up. I can't remember if it was the part's or discussion area. Do a search, or maybe someone will remember.
I went to my local dealer and got all the stuff for like $22. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif
You will need to use a different radiator cap. I went with a vented cap on the jug too. The only thing is, it didn't fit my plastic fender well's all that great. But the other guy's who used it, said it fit their metal one's fine.
Here's all the part #'s and a Picture (http://www.chevelles.com/showroom/72sselcamino/tank.jpg) http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif Hope this help's.

Ditto. Havent installed it yet but thats what I got.
Do you have to use that rad cap or just any 16 lb cap? I didnt know about the rad cap until now. When I went to the dealer they gave me the bottle and the cap for the bottle, not for the rad.

chev64 Jan 3rd, 03, 2:02 PM You have to use a cap that is meant for a recovery system. It will have a gasket on it where the regular non recovery cap doesn't, in the area it seals the very top of the rad neck and a 16 # cap is probably best.

Actually, If your running a replacement cap like a Stant or something like that, you probably dont need to replace it all for it to work right! I'd bet the part numbers are the same for a '70 454 and a '74 454, '74 being a "known" year when they were using coolant recovery tanks.
This is a super cool idea, and also thanks to the poster who gave the part numbers! I'm gonna assemble a "kit" too http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif!
