: 68 Chevelle question
Rick_Nelson Dec 31st, 02, 2:54 PM Excuse the ignorance but I have not had that much contact with the '68 Chevelle.
I just looked at a '68 SS396 Chevelle minus engine/trans but otherwise there. Make no mistake about it, the car is junk . My question is, the car has a factory KK coded 4:10 posi rear, no P/S, manual drum brakes and no gauges. I see no race decals or any other signs of the car being raced other than a large hole cut for the shifter. It was an original 4-speed car also. The car has odd looking lower rear control arms with steel bushings and the emergency brake cable is routed through a bracket welded to the control arm. The arms were painted red or orange.
My question is, the current owner wants $900 for the car (VERY little salvageable except the rear end) and I am curious what this car may has started out in life as. At minimum, I am assuming an L-78 engine as there are no other signs pointing to a Harrell car or any other dealer prepped car. What is the value of a '68 KK coded rear? Thanks for the help,
Rick

If it was an orig 4spd why was the hole cut??

Is it that rusted out,not salvagable body parts, fenders, qtrs??
If this is of any value, my reference shows the KK code for all '66 through '69 4.10 posi Chevelle rear ends.

Rick_Nelson Dec 31st, 02, 3:48 PM I have no clue why such a large hole was cut out. Part of the original 4-speed hole is still there but a much larger hole was cut out with a tin snips. No shifter I know of has that big a throw! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/rolleyes.gif
Trust me when I say it is junk. The frame was rotted through, the gas tank pulled the trunk pan through the frame rails, the trans cross member was broke in half, etc, etc.
Von, I assumed the rear was original to the car based on the date but typically 4:10 gears were put in HP models only. I know you can order that gear as well but I thought it was then dealer installed not factory. Just seams like such an odd car the way it is set up. I just can't see spending $900 for a rear end that likely needs going thru and there is virtually nothing else salvageable on this car outside of some brackets and clips. The owner will not negotiate even with cash in hand. I offered him $500. When he said no because the rearend was worth more than that, to which I replied, "great, so take the rearend out, sell it and junk the car!"

hoffbug Dec 31st, 02, 4:28 PM Rick...As abused as it sounds,
Id sure like to see the gears and test the posi breakaway torque before I laid any cash out. God only knows what is in there now!
JWA Dec 31st, 02, 11:18 PM Pass on it. Heck even on ebay you could possibly get a better rearend for the money he wants. BTW I bought a 69 4.10 rear a couple of months ago for $450. Just for posterity I put in new gears and rebuilt the posi.

In '69 anyway, the KK 4.10 was available with L34 350 hp engines as well as L78's. Not sure about '68.

Rick_Nelson Jan 1st, 03, 10:18 AM Tnaks guys, this car has some history behind it I can feel it but just can't document it. Unfortunately, I am not going to pay a King's ransom for one useable part. Thanks for the input.
