Alright guys, cars is on stands up front and the suspension is literally all torn down to the frame except control arms. Went out to muscle the bolts loose with the "foot on wrench" method and looked over the jack stand positions first. Apparently I didnt get them as square on the frame as I thought and it flat out doesnt look safe to me. The stands are too close to the portion of the frame that slides upward into the wheelwell area, almost right on the bend. I need to reposition them and also want to get another set under it for assurance.

On to my Q - Lifting her back up by the main crossmember with no wheels on her makes me nervous as she could shift right of left and in turn come down on me. Would the best way to approach it be to take, for instance, two scissor style or two bottle jacks and lift from the outer rails in equal incriments per side and then repostion? It aint stable as is and I enjoy my legs and want to approach relifting in the safest manner possible.

BTW, I blame it one the beer goggles that evening so sorry for the silly post (yeah, yeah, its a rookie move....I know). Looked right at the time though. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I wouldn't worry about it to much as it should only be on the jack a very short time, and you only need about 3 inches of lift to get the stands repositioned.

Put another set of stands under the frame at another area just in case it would slip off the jack. That way if it would slip off it will be AT LEAST resting on another set of stands insteds of on the garage floor...or worse yet on you!!!

The center of ballance for our cars is veyr good. The car will not fall to one side. I've gone as far as to lift/shift/rock the front end while only be supported by the front crossmember.

Your GTG.

But hell, all you have to do is lift it 1 inch off the jacks then slide them back. Rocking 1-2" won't hurt a damn thing.

Im about to dig in. I started last night but once I got my foot on the wrench and started yanking that SOB shimmied a little and squeeked and that was enough for me to question stability. Dont want to end up like Lt. Dan in Forrest Gump.

I'll throw her back in the air and get to work this evening. Thanks. I just know if I'd of done it at the crossmember without asking murphys law would of handed me my arse

Throw the front tires under the car, behind the jack stands, just in case.

As Brian was saying above,

I would add another set of jackstands, and if still in doubt, I used to place the wheels under the frame too, so it would fall on the wheels first...

You only need to lift it slightly to reposition the jackstands, and the stands will still be under the frame at all times.

Also, if you use two wrenches in an opposing motion (one on the nut, one on the bolt), that will help minimize the pull on the car... Make sure the woman (or someone) is nearby, in case any assistance is needed...

Beaux,
ever get ahold of Ron about those blocks?

Yeah, thats what I was doing but alas the legs be stronger then the arms. Havent talked to Ron yet but got a couple of leads from Craig and Alan. Will let you know. Going to ask Al to give Ron a call later on. Tires are under the ride, picking up extra stands and im in it to win it.

Will get back to you about the blocks, im on a mission too! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif

I keep an assortment of scrap lumber around for such things...6x6's, 4x4's, 2x4's, 1x4's, etc.
They come in handy. That way you can adjust the height of the car and if it falls it only has 3/4" - 1 1/2" to drop if something slips.
I've seen guys with cars on 4 stacks of cinder blocks 4 or 5 feet high on dirt. Looks too dangerous for me.

Are you worried about the front of the car falling? or the whole thing? If the whole thing is on stands put another set under the rear end tubes where the axles are. I lifted my car 2 feet in the air by the cradle (cross member) with a wally world jack. And put a starter in. Talk about scarey. I had jack stands tho. IF all else fails...Wrap a tow strap around the crossmember and hook it to your engine hoist and crank her up. THe ultimate jack stand right there. I say you get "car guy safe" and just use some of the above methods tho. I like the Tire method http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I got it taken care of. It wasnt a bgi deal, just that the SOB squeeked and shifted a little and I wanted to get some opinions on the safest way to get her right.

I lifted her back up from the main crossmember and although she was leaning a little I just hurried and re-positioned the stands and set her down. My main concern was safety (more for the car than me)as there's no suspension or tires up front if she tilted and slid off.

And yeah, Chris, if you guys are coming out for the turlock swap Ill see you there. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif
