Has anyone tried that bubble foil wrapped insulation as sound deadening stuff? The stuff that's about3/8" thick foil with bubbles between the foil!I know it works as heat shield but how about for sound????Any better than Dynomax?
Just curious http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif

I was wondering the same thing. I have used that stuff on ductwork for furnaces in crawlspaces with good results. I have the black sound ner kit thats like what the car came with, but it seems like the bubble wrap idea would be better. Hopefully someone will have first hand experince and chime in. sorry I wasnt more help . Ed

I was that exact stuff in my Nova when I replaced the carpeting... good, but not great. It was cheap and easy, but it did not give me any better performance than the 'regular' underlayment from the factory. It does cushion nicely and insulates better, but noise is the same or worse than factory. If I get the chance to do it again, I would still use the insulation, but under it I would use some kind of sound deadener like the Dynomat... I will use something much cheaper tho: www.mcmaster.com (http://www.mcmaster.com) item number 9709T19 is the exact same thing as dynomat but without the Dynomat logo! You can do the whole car for under $50!

Good luck,
Bill C.

I am using it in my '68 project. It's cheap and locally available from Lowes. I got the tip from a custom interior shop in town and he uses it in everything (behind door panels, under headliner, firewall, floors....). He claims it not only keeps the heat out but works for noise also. My buddy with a Pro street Camaro used it to cool his interior from header heat and he loves it, but said he can't tell if its more quiet because how quiet can you get with a 427 and 3" exhaust! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif.

I put it in my convertible this summer. I thought it was great. The car is much cooler. Can't comment on the noise factor because I had only 1 muffler and as soon as the car went back together, I took it to get the exhaust replaced. Too many variables to say one way or another.

ditto on the mcmaster stuff...I've got 4 sheets waiting to be installed in my 70. I'm going to cover that with insulation that is the standard cloth type, with an aluminum backing. I'll have $85 total invested when I'm done.

Thats better for a thermal insualtion, not too good for sound.

I used the bubble stuff in my car and it did little to dampen the low frequency resonation of a 4" exhaust system or the valve train noise. It may have blocked some heat, but not much.

I just replaced the bubble stuff with Dynamat Extreme and it also did little to dampen the exhaust noise. It seems to have made the interior a little cooler and it did dampen the valve train noise.

I also used the McMasters stuff. Three sheets delivered < $50 covered all the floor and the smuggler's box in my elkie. Works for heat and sound, real easy to install, and a lot cheaper than Dynomat.
Used spray on undercoating to touch up the original stuff that was inside the doors.

I last stuff I used in my PU was a very dense black foam pad that I picked up at a local swap meet. I think it was $10 for a 3'x3' piece that is 1/2" thick. I laid it on the floor and up under the seat. Works great but had to trim around gas pedal, I can actually talk to person next to me now. Also seen it at Auto Fair.
