Yes I am almost positive you could order the 396/402 in 70-72 with the Malibu package. I know its true in 72.

the reason im asking is im looking to buy a 70 ss numbers matching 396. no build sheet i was told the way to tell if it was a real ss was a build sheet or a numbers match. now if a 70 malibu could be had with a 396 is it not possible to switch the malibu over with ss trim and call it a numbers matching ss? just looking to get a real ss and not a clone. In 1970, it would have been a Malibu 400 with the 402/330hp engine. Probably had a different stamp than the SS396 engines.

I may be the only one, but id rather have a matching #'s Malibu 396 than an SS, they gotta be rare if they exist.

I would also love to buy a documented malibu 400 with the stripe option (stock), still retaining all malibu trim.

I mean SS's are cool and all, but i see so many 70 SS's and clones that i just walk past them at car shows. I'll stop for a nice malibu though.

If you go through a lot of hammers each month, I don't think it necessarily means you're a hard worker. It may just mean that you have a lot to learn about proper hammer maintenance. (Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey)

They made the the "Malibu 400" in 70 thru 72.
They used the LS-3 402 motor.
I think (but not sure) that the 402 was the largest engine you could get in a non SS car.

They are fairly rare. I have only seen a handful of them.

I have a 71 "Malibu 400" but I don't have the numbers matching engine or tranny. I think mine (if it were complete) would be quite rare. It came with the 300hp LS-3 and a manual 3-speed tranny, 12 bolt and bucket seats. It has manual steering, manual brakes and no AC. I don't have it anymore, but I saw the build sheet and it was correct.

This is the only (from the factory) big block, stick shift Malibu that I have ever seen.

Hey 71454 did you pick that car up in Dayton, Ohio? I knew a kid that had a light green 71 Malibu 402 with a 3-speed manual. My Dad bought a 70 with the 330 hp 402 back in 1979 he turned it into a SS clone. He put the guage dash in and everthing. He found a 70 SS454 parting out and got the bumper, exhaust, wheels, all the emblems inside and out for 125.00 back in 1980. It already came with the 400 Turbo, bucket and console. I know it did not have Positraction though it could burn one tire for a mile.

Larry,
No I got mine from here in Indy way back in '84. I bought it off a buddy's brother that I used to work with.
The car originally came from Georgia and only spent about 2 winters on the road (daily driver) so it didn't get much exposure to road salt. Mine is also red and by the time I got it someone had already swapped out the 3-spd for an M-21.
I have always wondered how many BB/stick shift Malibu's they made, now I know of at least 2. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif
