I need to replace the control cables in my 68
and it looks like it requires the duct to come out to get that done.I was advised to replace the heater core at that point also which makes a lot of sense. My question is,once I get all the nuts off from around the cover on the engine side firewall will the duct just pull out?I just loosened up the
inner fender and will try to get that blind bolt out tonight.
thanks guys,
Tony

Tony,

I just did this two months ago...

1) Pull the glove box liner out
2) Drop the inner fender
3) Remove the cables where they attach to the heater box under the dash
4) Drain the system and remove the heater hoses at the firewall
5) Remove the nuts from inside the engine compartment

The box should basically fall out.

Some things to think about at this point

1) Install a new heater box gasket set
2) Install a new set of hoses
3) Install a new inner glovebox
4) Check the firewall pad - it may be really nasty!

If the car is a no a/c car, it should just fall out. There is no ducting actually attached to the unit, save a small one on the bottom that the heat comes out of. And, you can leave that one on with no issues.

AND ALSO HEED THE ADVICE ABOUT REPLACING THE HEATER CORE. They're tooooooooooooooo cheap and, guaranteed, if you don't replace it now, you'll be sorry soon!
You didn't mention if your car is air or non-air, but, as I recall, if it is an air car (the reason I know is that we just replaced the one in my son's air car), the heater core is 68 ONLY and they are still available. So get one now!
