i have a problem with my steering wheel collumn when i shift the car into p r n or drive it doesnt engage the linkage to the tranny i can move it by hand standing outside the car but not while sitting in it.i think something is broke but dont know what to do about it the column looks like a lot of pieces to tear apartreally dont know where to start any help would be appreciated and i do have access to a 70 chevelle if it would be the same thanks in advance

Column shift? As soon as I take mine out, you can have it for the cost of shipping! I'm converting to floor shift and I've already obtained a floor shift column.

thanks Randy but i have one in my 70 parts car i think it is the same as a 71 isnt it ?

sounds like its just an adjustment problem.

There is a "shift tube" inside the column that connects the shift lever in the car to the lower mechanism. I suspect that the lower part has broken off. You will need to disassemble the column and repair/replace the tube.
