View Full Version : speedometer cable replacement

My service manual says that the entire dash must be removed to replace the speedometer cable. Is this really necessary? Is there any other way? The car is a 1970 chevelle hardtop SS.

Thanks,

RLK,

It can't be much different than my 69'. You can reach up behind the speedo with one hand and push in the retainer with one finger while pulling the cable with the rest of your fingers...

If you don't mind contorting your body a little you may be able to lay on your back and get a glimps of what you are doing.

Good luck.

Thanks for providing me a glimmer of hope. When the service manual listed a complete dash removal for speedo cable service, my heart sank http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif

I'll give it a try in the morning.

I finished the job. I had to remove the dash pad so one hand could drop down from the top while the other came in from the bottom. It worked and I now have a new speedo cable. If you wondered, I did this to fix jitter in the speedometer needle.
